Has anyone seen any mods for the XBOX 360 HD-DVD?

I've see that it may be possible to use certain hardware so that we can make it into internal. However I have not seen it done or heard it's confirmed.

Just wondering if it can be done.

YEa. I know that. But I want to take it out of the external box and try to make it internal. Make it fit into the 5.25 bays.

Thanks fo the link!

Those guys are retarded... I think most noobs on H know more than them!

Didn't I already link you up with the pictures of it all taken apart?

It looks like it would be very easy to mod into a 5.25'' bay. Once you take the outer shell off, it looks pretty darn close to your standard 5.25'' drive, but with an extra controller board you would need to stick somewhere.

The main 2 things that should worry you more than mounting are:

1) How to connect the USB. This should be easy though since all you need to do is run the USB wire from the controller board to your USB port. Or, you could splice the wires and put a USB header on it and plug it directly into your motherboard if you have an open header.

2) The power issue. You need to power the drive somehow. I don't know how its setup because there aren't super detailed pictures, but I'm betting you could just rig the inverter up to power the drive off of the ATX12V lines in your pc. If not, the easy way is to just run the power wire out the back of your computer and plug it into the wall.

Why would you use it as an internal USB drive? You can plug it into a standard IDE cable. Go get one of these...power and data through the main mini-atapi connector.

It is standard laptop drive, with standard laptop connectors...there is nothing special about it.

They also make laptop optical drive brackets for use in standard 5.25" drive bays...get one.

Yes, the first thing would work, theoretically. We'll have to see, because nobody has tried it yet. I don't see why it would not work though.

But, for the second link with the slim drive thing.. the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player is a full size height drive as you can see from the pictures.

You would be correct in that it isn't a slimline drive, I don't know why i thought that, but then again it doesn't look like a full/true 5.25" drive either

I know I was thinking the same thing. lol. :D It looks like a 2/3 height drive or something weird. The best way to mount this IMO would be to stick it in a 5.25'' bay and stealth it.

When opened it seems like it is.

Someone tried the IDE adapter thingy and it didn't work. He also messed his HD up too! lol Did he know what he was doing? I don't know. I don't want to risk it.

If an IDE adapter works so be it. I would use that. Personally I don't really care if I have to run a USB cable from outside to inside. They have thin ones so no prob thought the IDE or STA would be better. My main concern is trying to fit in in a bay...

Thanks guys... good links. I'm sure this will eventually help more ppl.

The price on the adapter is right too! 0! :p

I'd like to see proof of these people doing all the talking though. Most of these things are just internet rumors and stuff. I am in the process of looking for a 360 HD-DVD drive right now so I can start modding on it. If nobody wants a trade in my FS/FT thread, I'll just go out and buy one with the CC $40 off coupon. Its good until the new year.

Thats what I did.

Sweet. If they don't take it just go to manger. Maybe he'll hook u up!!

Someone posted to try one of these at the first post.

i used this one below here.

here i used one of these and now my HD DVD drive doesnt work… plus the computer wouldnt load with this used and my HD DVD drive installed. so anyone else try this and get it to work… i put the HD DVD player back together and connected back to the xbox and when a HD DVD is put in it stays in the READING process on the xbox… so to say the least anyone else confirm this…. i think i toasted my drive.. dang 200 bucks…

I used the floppy power and IDE btw

meh, he probably shorted the circuit board with static when he took it apart.. then he put it back together and it wouldn't work. :p

I don't see the big deal using it via USB. It's not that big a device.

I wouldn't open it until the warranty has expired. We really don't know the lifetime of these next-gen drives and blue lasers.

That is true. It probably has a short warranty like 90 days.

It's a tad noisy and sounds very close to the 360 when it plays dvd's.

It isn't big but it really colides with my setup. It's the only "white" ugly looking thing.

nada what? lol.

oh btw, I got the 360 HD-DVD player if you didn't know already, and I'm just using it as an external drive. Sounds pretty quiet to me. I can't even hear it playing a disk. But, I don't have any more open bays on my v1000 to put it in. :p
