How do I get the SMP client running on VIsta Ultimate 64bit? I've tried a few times now and I just can't get it to start crunching on a WU. Here's an excerpt from the log file on the last try - It's the same error every time I try it. Any suggestions?

Pretty much the same way you do in Vista 32 actually.

First go to your control panel, user accounts and double click

Bottom of that page is "Turn user accounts on or off", click and select off. Make sure nothing is running because as soon as you say ok the machine will reboot.

If you already have the client installed delete it and do a fresh install. By default it will install into your program (X86) files section. Windows is SMP is a 32 bit client so that is where it belongs.

Your administration account NEEDS to be passworded. That is, when you boot into windows you must enter a password. You will need that password to install the program.

After all that and after you have installed the program go to windows explorer and double click the install bat. You will need two things at this point, your hostname and the password you log in with. If you are unsure of your hostname open a dos prompt and type in "hostname". You will probably see what looks like two names seperated by a \. For instance my hostname reads c:\users\BILL64. BILL64 is the actual host name.

Enter your host name and hit enter and the next thing you should see is a prompt for a password. Enter your login password and hit enter, it will ask for it again so enter it again. At that point you should see two files start and the msg push any key to exit.

During that last operation you should see either windows firewall pop up twice so click allow twice. You will also see a prompt that says for this user only or all users. I choose all users.

The Win SMP client will NOT run as a service so don't even try, it's buggy at the moment and can make you nuts. That said you have a few choices. I'm a huge fan of the quick launch bar which you can enable from the tool bar, or you can simply create a shortcut on your desktop..

Now, before you do anything else go back to the control panel and re-enable user accounts and again windows will reboot. If you don't have to enter a pass word to log on none of the above should have worked.

Log on and go to your shortcut and click properties and at the end of theh short cut command add a space and -configonly. close the shortcut and double click it. FAH should come up asking for your username, team number "33" etc. Say no to use IE settings for your connection and keep hitting enter until you get "accept work units in excess of 5 megs, type in "yes" hit enter till you get to change advanced settings, type yes then enter. The only things you are really interested in this section are make sure your core priority is idle, it's the default and when you get to memory allocation enter 512. then hit enter to machine number which should be default at #1, you can type 1 in anyway just to be sure. At that poing the client should shut down telling you you started it with -configonly.

Now, go back to your shortcut and if you are positive you have a totaly stable machine change the -configonly to -forceasm. Save and close the short cut.

Now the somewhat tricky part. Double click the short cut and the client should start, download the core and in a few moments start folding. The tricky part is, I've done that and right after it downloads the core and starts folding some times the client errors out. If you run into this don't panic. Right click your shortcut and start in Admin mode. From there is should download another core and start folding. At that point your should be able to do a ctl+c to shut down the client and restart it with a double click and things should work fine.

The only other dumb thing I've seen is when you restart the client in non admin mode it just might ask you the same questions it did during config only. If so, use the info above and it should work just find ater that.

I know that's a lot of crap to go through but I'm trying to think of every variation I have run into and what I had to do to fix people's machines, the above should cover them all.

any questions feel free to PM me or ask here

Luck and enjoy the 64 bit client, it's rock solid.;)

Good setup instructions, one additional thing, SMP does run as a service. Go into the services, find the FAH@C:+....SMP Client and right click on it. Choose properties and click on the Log On Tab. Under Log on as: instead of leaving it on the Local System account, check the This account: radio button and put in the account that you used to install MPI and then put in the password. Click OK, now the service will run under that account name. Setup the client config as you normally would and choose to run it as a service. If you want to test if it is working, reboot your PC, once it's rebooted, give it a minute or two and you'll see the processor usage shoot to 100%, you can also check the FAH log to see if it is running.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. The things I didn't do when installing was turn user accounts off, and I used -config instead of -configonly. I will try again tonight when the graphical client finishes up a WU, I've lost two in the last two days trying to get the SMP one going. One last question, can you "pause" the SMP client like the standard client?

no... you cannot pause the SMP client.

The only way I know is to press control-C at the same time.

This aborts the SMP client.

no... you cannot pause the SMP client.

This aborts the SMP client.

This does "usually" work to stop the SMP client but if you do stop the SMP client you need to check if it's still running regardless of your stopping/closing it's window. One most of the computers I've tried the SMP client on that works fine and I can restart it again no problems. One one computer - about half the time it dumps the WU when I restart the client. I think others have said that you might even consider making a backup copy of the work data when you stop the SMP client.

I make backup copies of both the work folder and the queue.dat file.
That way I can retry starting it if it dumps the work unit.

I've also found out that on the boxen that dont load well after a reboot, you need to let it sit in idle for a couple of minutes before starting the client.
The success rate goes from 50% to +90% doing that.

Luck .......... :D

I'm still getting the same error, this time installed with no problems. Tried with and without -forceasm. Here's the last log without:

Is the MPICH2 service started? Check in your administrative tools>services to be sure that is running.

I had same problem recently - reinstal whole F@H SMP and when you start install/config/fah.exe - you HAVE TO right click on icon and "run as administrator" - this solved problem in my case:) .

Easier would be to find the "Command prompt" shortcut then run it by right-clicking on it and select "Run as administrator". In this command line window, you can do all it require to make it run.

Damn, still no luck. SMP installs fine, but I get the same "CoreStatus = 63 (99)" error each time. I'm starting to think the SMP client does not like my overclock. Oh well, the other client runs like a champ and I'm not taking the time to redo my system for a beta client. Need to spend that time with the kids! Thanks for all the advice, I'm going to keep it handy in case I ever end up with a free day to monkey with my system, but that is getting more and more rare these days. I will try again with the next SMP client release, or when I get some free time.

Error 63 seems to be a permissions issue. Can you paste the whole log and the install.bat results since it seems you may not have installed it correctly.

Tried again, here's the Fahlog:

"Access is denied. (error 5) --------------------------could this be the problem?????????
" is precisely your problem.

You need to run install.bat with full administrators rights, not just under a administrator account. You can either start explorer.exe by right-clicking on it and select "Run as administrator" then click on install.bat or start "Command prompt" (cmd.exe) and right-click to "Run as administrator" then type install.bat after moving to the FAH folder.

If you don't see Access is denied, you are golden.

Sounds good, will give it another shot hopefully tonight, possibly tomorrow. Thanks for the help so far.

Another thing I forgot to say is to move the FAH folder on another place (like C:\FAH) since putting in C:\Program Files\ give a extra headache due to the hidden administrative restrictions.

w00t! Got it working. Had some time on my lunch break and had to try again. Installed to different folder, but install.bat would not run right under explorer as admin. So I ran it under the command prompt as admin and it worked fine. Thanks for all the help and suggestions to get this going for me, I've managed to get every other program I use to work great under Vista, but this one I needed some help with.

This should be moved to one of those 'I don't like Vista' threads that keep
popping up, lol. :)

I'm going to have to start making backups on my opty box....whenever I stop the client, it will hose itself when it starts again. Had to stop it last night and forgot to restart it before I went to bed.....12 hours later I realized it wasn't running so I fired it back up.....only to have it crap out at 89% and grab another wu :( 2 days and 1523+ pts gone......I'm sad.....was finally getting my ppd average up to 3000.
