Is there a current list that shows all of the S-IPS monitors out there? I know Dell has its lottery and Nec has one (not sure of product names/models though) Anyone else? HP still have theirs?

Haven't been able to keep track of all the monitor changes the last few months heh.

Thanks :)

If you want widescreen then the two you mentioned are the only game in town....but not for long. The NEC is already discontinued and being discounted to move stock before the new models (TN panel) arrive. Dell has already announced the 2008WFP (also TN) so it's just a matter of time before production of the 2007WFP stops. It looks like for this generation there won't be any 20" widescreen S-IPS panels...and may never be again. I've heard that IPS panels are more complicated, take longer and are more prone to problems during production (dead pixels and such) so naturally companies are going with the cheaper TN panels for most of their monitor lines. Looks like IPS will be reserved for the Dell 30" (unless they decide to go with something else) and a few professional monitors of various sizes that will also carry a higher pricetag than the usual consumer models.

edit- moments after I posted this I noticed an article about LG/Philips new panels for this year...none were any form of IPS and they have a new 30" widescreen S-PVA which I suspect Dell will use in their 3007WFP refresh. IPS really does seem to be dead for the near future. :(

This is certainly the trend, though LG not using IPS is nothing new. AFAIK they have no IPS monitors within the last year. They make the panels, but they don't use them. When I saw that I figured the writing was on the wall.

The new 30" S-PVA, hopefully it goes in a 3008wfp so we can distinguish them and know when our last chance for a S-IPS is.

Anyone know the NEC model that is S-IPS? And is it the same as the Dell or is the Dell better/worse? Also does HP still have their 20" S-IPS or did it get sucked away in the lottery as well?

I've spoken to LG and received an email stating that the L2000C 20.1" is S-IPS,but then again, with all the disinformation being bandied about concerning panels, who the hell knows for sure! I assume that you are refering to the LP2065.Again,LOTS of contradictory info.Consenus is that HP switched these to all AMVA panels,HOWEVER,there are some reports that S-IPS units are still around-again,who the hell knows!

Where did you see that? According to TFT Central, the new 30" LG-Philips LM300WQ5 is definitely an S-IPS panel, and if you download the catalog from here it's confirmed on page 5 of the PDF....

20WMGX-BK is the name of the 20" NEC monitor... I forgot if it uses AS-IPS or S-IPS.. meh.

Up to date in that they still possibly add new panels. But out of date when you consider that 95% plus of that list are older discontinued screens. Yeah dell 2001/2005 panels had S-IPS, hardly means that today they are available.

The list at the moment for available widescreen 20" is likely:
Dell 2007
Apple ACD
NEC 20WMGX2

Likely all on their last legs, we have seen the Dell 2008 (TN) apple has replaced the 20" iMac screen with TN and the ACD may follow, the 20WBGX2 is being replaced and it won't be S-IPS.

In 6 months that list might have a lot of S-IPS listed, but there won't be a single consumer S-IPS screen available for purchase.

yep fair point, old models are not removed. Nowadays only 20" S-IPS are likely to be a few NEC, Philips, Apple and Dell models really.

Wow thats one hell of a list thanks!

Do you know when it was last updated?
Keep in mind that quite a few on that list are older IPS models that have a really slow response time and many of them are no longer available regardless. Some of them are tv's also..

edit- beaten a couple posts up. :)

Yeah thats true, and it sucks :(, whats the difference between the AS-IPS and S-IPS? Is the NEC better / worse than the Dell?

Seems like I'll be getting a Dell soon... hope they go on sale / give away coupons soon :(

From what I can tell...the AS-IPS (used by NEC) is simply an updated version of the panel used in the Dell. The specs are slightly different...the biggest one is the 6ms response time for the AS-IPS vs the the 16ms for the Dell S-IPS. (although independent testing confirms it's actually closer to 8ms) I don't notice ghosting/input lag on either.

I have both monitors and both are great for my uses (websurfing, Xbox 360, some pc gaming, tv on the NEC) with the strengths and weaknesses of each making them pretty equal...with the slight nod to the NEC for being a pretty decent bedroom tv. If you're going to get either I wouldn't wait too long...the NEC is already discontinued and the Dell soon will be if it isn't already..

Can't wait for them to be discontinued, my 2007WFP will shoot up in value =p

I think it is spec'ed higher for Dells lotto, to make sure all specs fit the panels they might specify. I think the actual IPS panels is spec'ed at 8ms.

How so? Unless you get lucky and have a bidding war between 2 people who are part of the 1% of the population who knows what IPS is (and happen to be in the market for a used Dell monitor) then you'll be lucky to get back what you paid for it. We take it for granted that a lot of people know the difference between panel types...but the fact is that not even half the people on the [H] forums every day know or care, much less the general buying public.

Yep.

Most of my friends are techies, I work with a bunch of other Engineers and CompSci folks and I never met another person who even knows there are different kinds of LCD panels, let alone what the characteristics of each are. To the vast majority of people they are just LCD's, even among tech heads.

So the chance of this mattering when selling are pretty close to zero.

Though anyone in Ottawa with a IPS 2007fp (4:3) get in touch, I am interested. :D

Looks like Dell has already discontinued the 2007WFP (they said they were out of stock) in Australia and New Zealand. What is worse is we don't seem to get any NEC monitors in NZ. So looks like I won't be able to get a 20" WS IPS without spending USD$700+ on an Apple screen.

Which are the top 5-10 monitors on this list that are the best at crisp and best legible text quality?

This is a 2 year old thread.

At this point, instead of hunting out those models, it might be better to score an e-ips Dell 2209WA.

I read the reviews and the e-ips is not up to my standards on that monitor. I prefer a proper s-ips with as good latency as I can get and as razor sharp easy-to-read text quality as possible. What do you hardforum gurus suggest that meet those criteria?

When speaking of text quality on the 2209WA, prad.de said: "A razor sharp image is displayed with sharpness setting 50."

Average input lag is 9ms according to digitalversus, 20ms according to prad.de, and 20ms according to a HardOCP user. Other reviews I found elsewhere usually pegged the average at 20ms, so I'll believe that and assume digitalversus screwed up. This is about as good as any IPS monitor gets - the S-IPS NEC 20WMGX2 had about 16ms average.

If you continue to incorrectly believe that the 2209WA is not up to your criteria, I can assure you that you will not find any monitor that is up to your criteria. Again - the 2209WA is the only 22" IPS monitor. There are no 22" S-IPS monitors. If you move up to 24" IPS monitors, your choices are the HP LP2475 ($500+) and the NEC 2490 ($1100+). Good luck finding any 20.1" IPS monitors - they are long out of manufacture.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a Geforce 2 GTS based video card that supports PCI-E x16, could you help me out? Also I want the one that overclocks the highest, so please compile a list of 5-10 manufacturers that make one, in descending order with the highest clock speed first and lowest last.

I need a video card with a fixed function hardware T&L unit, so none of the newer ones that use programmable vertex/pixel shaders for T&L will do, as it's not the same thing. Thanks!

Thank you all for your experienced input, I sincerely appreciate it. It seems like the Dell 2209wa is not all that its being hyped to be according to this reviewer:

http://tszynalski.wordpress.com/2009/05/01/review-of-the-dell-2009wa/

He compared the 2209WA to an Eizo that cost twice as much, and rated the 2209WA much better, particularly in regards to the sharpness of text display. He kept the 2209WA and returned the Eizo.

What's being hyped is not its perfection - it isn't perfect, and that review pointed out its flaws accurately - but its low cost when it's on sale, which is more often than not. Compare it to other monitors that cost $200-$220. They're all crappy TNs which can't even begin to approach it. Compare it to monitors that cost twice as much and it still comes away favorably. You need to spend $500 or more before you find monitors equal or better.

okay, thanks for your input. what $500+ 22'' monitor is better than the 2209wa and makes up for the 2209wa's flaws?

There are none. Note that I said monitors, not 22" monitors. There are some 24" monitors (HP LP2475w, NEC 2490) and 26" monitors (Planar PX2611W, DoubleSight DS-265W, NEC 2690).

For more information, see the Anandtech LCD Thread.

Every LCD monitor has their own set of flaws you're going to have to deal with. If you're that insistent on not getting the 2209WA, you're going to have to be specific on exactly what flaws you're looking to avoid (if any).

Newer technologies are emerging like cPVA (Circular PVA). The first cPVA will be the Samsung 20" F2080 and F2380.

If the hype is true then these monitors will keep the same superior black levels and viewing angles, improve clarity and sharpness and colors.

And if all this pans out, it sounds like it will be much better than IPS based monitors, however reviews are sparce on these models and the Samsung line is not a spruced up version of the cPVA which could be made even better by manufacturers like Eizo and others when they get these new panels.

I have yet to buy a new monitor myself. cPVA could live up to what I want or a new IPS based panel.

Pricing on the cPVA models is not bad.

Stock has come in on the F2080 at approx 250.00 and F2380 at approx 330.00 depending on vendor. Looks like they just came. Yesterday it was a preorder.

Hopefully ratings come in on these really soon.
