So, here's the deal. A couple of weeks ago, my boss told me that the Dell craptacular Celeron based laptop with 512MB of ram that I was using had to be returned to Dell, as it was a lease purchase. He asked me if I wanted a Sager as a replacement...to which I could not reply...because I was too busy thinking of all of the crap that I could do on such a hefty DTR notebook.

Fast forward to after the Dell has been returned, I instead wind up with an Acer. Not a bad laptop, but it's no Sager, to be sure. Here's the specs:

AMD Turion MK-36 2.0GHz
1GB (2x512MB) DDR2-667
80GB 2.5" IDE HDD
8X Dual layer burner
17" Widescreen, 1280x768
GeforceGo 6200M 256MB
probably about 7lbs...definately not a Sager DTR

I have had the Acer for a few weeks now, and finally got all my apps, virtual machine images loaded, updated, other things configured, and the boss decides that he's going to pay too much in taxes if he doesn't spend some $ real quick-like (of course, this is in addition to the normal profit sharing/401K contributions that are already planned). So again, he asks me if another co-worker and I want a Sager (co-workers laptop was crappier than my Dell was). I had an immediate ear to ear smile. On top of a nice new DTR, we also do work with the PS3's running Linux, programming for the Cell processors, etc. PS3 natively uses HDMI, and the boss is a huge fan of Blu-Ray...can you guess what's coming? A 24" LCD with HDMI that does 1920x1200. I run a 37" westy at home, so I'm used to a big screen, and HDMI isn't exactly new...but I've never had one that nice at work! The new screen will be in by next week, and the guys at Sager told me that they are hoping to start shipping their pre-orders before the end of next week. I won't have it to play with over the christmas break...but holy hell....SWEET! This laptop will run circles around my current rig at home...and that's definately a first for me.

Here's the monitior we settled on:

Here's the laptop configuration that we ordered:

No SLi on the laptop, although I will probably set it for RAID-0 when I get it, and see if it really makes a noticable difference on the laptop HDDs. So, what do you guys think!? Not bad for free, eh? And we're moving offices soon too, and going to SIPS trunks, and going to integrate a set of linux communication products and virtualize all of our servers as well. I'll be able to work from home, have all my calls forwarded to my laptop, my cell phone, my bluetooth headset, and get voicemail in my Outlook in about 6 months. And the real upside!? Staying home to get some "work" done in whatever my latest game is. [H]ard...

lol i think our website went down. luckily, I am the technical solutions advisor...not the web maintainer. :D

delivery is confirmed to be this next Tuesday, 01/08/08. I will be taking pics and giving some info once it arrives, for those of you interested. As an aside, we ordered two of these. The package shipping weight is 44.0 lbs! :D

Damn, that notebook has quite a bit more horsepower than my desktop!

Good luck with it...I'm curious to see how it works out for ya.

HA!! Too funny! My boss just bought me a new MacBook Pro + LCD for the same tax reasons! I'm still deciding on a 27" or 30" monitor, but my MBP will arrive the same day as your Sager beast. Congrats!!

Check my current sig line...It has more horsepower than my current desktop, as well. I love when you get to anticipate something cool like this showing up. It makes me feel like a kid again. I spend all day configuring and building server, clusters, and storage solutions that are well into the six figure range, but it means little to me, as I do not get to use them, personally (other than doing an initial OS install, and burn-in before delivery). This thing is all mine...and it's gonna make my back hurt! Battery life on this is less than an hour under load...which won't be an issue. I will have nuked my nuts long before the battery runs out. :p;)

If you have the choice, I'd highly recommend the 30" over a 27". The difference is phenominal! We could ONLY afford to do 24" HDMI screens here :)D) due to the fact that we also ordered a bunch of upgrades for our server racks (in house), and a few other machines for other office personnel. I think we spent about $80k before end of fiscal year. I wish I had that kind of cash to burn!

wow congrats. That is a bitching notebook. I to know the feeling when you are waiting for something as my Dell XPS M1330 should shipping very very soon.

I imagine that's going to need a fairly beefy cooling system - will be interesting to see how noisy it is

Holy Balls, the only thing I have on you is that my q6600 is overclocked to 3.7 jiggawatts!

Here's some teaser pics guys. If I can get a few shots later that are less cluttered (work desk is a mess) and some internal shots with some of the covers off, I will post back. I'd love to semi-disassemble this thing, but I am loading partition #1 with stuff for work, and partition #2 for personal use...and I haven't even started on the personal stuff yet. The other laptop pictured is an Acer Aspire 9300 17" WS, just to give you an idea. The laptop is surprisingly quiet, and to be honest, does not get as hot as I thought it would. Here's some pics for now:

OMG, that's a beast. It definitely looks the part too...it's easy to see that it's quite a bit thicker than that Acer

okay guys, here's a few more of the new "work" laptop :D

Hard drive bays. This laptop can do 3 drives in RAID-5. Mine is setup for 2 in RAID-1

Picture of the MXM IV module slots, and you can just see the SO-DIMMS under the fan on the right.

Top of the lid, from the front
IMG_1628.jpg

Right side has 4x USB 2.0 ports
IMG_1629.jpg

Oddly, the rear is very uncluttered. This is due to all of the vent space required for cooling. Power, DVI and S-Video/Component output jack
IMG_1630.jpg

Lots of things on the left side - VGA port, TV tune S-Video input and Antenna (covered by plastic cover), Modem, GbE, FireWire, ExpressCard 32/54, 7-in-1 Card reader, and Dual layer burner down below
IMG_1631.jpg

Laptop w/lid opened. I can literally see myself as if it is a mirror when the display is not powered.
IMG_1632.jpg

And finally...don't see these on too many laptops...yet
IMG_1633.jpg

nice, thanks for the drool pics!!!

I wish makers would nix things like the VGA port and the S video. Useless for a beast of this type!!!!

id love to get into something like this sooner then later!

the s-video port is not really just s-video on this model, it's got a dongle for Component and S-video ouput. Also, it is interesting to note that the sage can apparently power a display on each of the DVI/VGA/Component ports separately..including the 17" WUSXGA screen attached to the laptop itself...at least, that's what Brian Law of Sager told me on the phone. I'll have to test it out.

First run of 3dMark06, had things going on in the background. I will see if I can get a better score by pumping the card using ATiTool, and I'm looking for a prog that can read the PLL chip on the board to OC the processor.

Thanks for the posting of the new laptop. I will be buying a laptop in the next few months, and I have been eyeing the Sagers, but haven't heard of anyone owning one. It looks like they have pretty good performance to price ratio. Much better than most manufacturers.

For those of you looking at this, keep in mind that the 4.8 score for disks is on the following:

Fujitsu 160GB MHW2160BH SATA 5400RPM in RAID-1

I'd love to test a RAID-0 just to see the difference, but the boss wants RAID-1, and he did pay for the machine. I guess I should be a good employee. That reminds me, I need to bring in my home machine and hook up the QuadroPlex 1000 version IV (dual quadro 5600's w/1.5GB of RAM each) and bench it against my new laptop!

Sager (Clevo OEM) makes ridiculously nice machines. Even the light/mobile ones (this one is neither, really) are great price/performance. They just don't skimp in most cases. Unfortunately, most people are hunting for the lowest price tag, so Sagers target demographic would likely be either business/enthusiast markets...people that know what the hell a computer should run like, and actually care. I'm loving this laptop...except the fact that we didn't get a backpack for it...so I'm hunting for one now. If I had one thing to say about this laptop...15lbs (laptop and power adapter combined) gets real heavy when it's in a standard Targus style laptop case, even with the over the shoulder strap. Get a backpack, period.

My coworker, who also got the same config as I did, put his into the carrying case, and then attached the shoulder sling to the case....and the sling literally busted the second that it hit his shoulder. The metal swivel piece literally came apart. We are pushing for the Targus XL backpacks as an expense, for $60. Hopefully, that goes through.

I wish that I could. However, anyonne that knows me personally can vouch for how financially screwed I have been the past year. I had to get a second job to try and catch up because I could not take the stress anymore. Aside from that, the boss is a big fan of "just expensing it."

Pics all set to 800x600, so it should be better.

I have 2 partitions on this machine, both running Vista Business x64 edition (our work MSDN Partner license doesn't give us download for Vista Ultimate...but we get the key...weird). I tried to get XP Pro x64 on my personal partition, but the driver disk from Sager said that the OS wasn't supported. I'd rather run Vista Business for the work partition, and XP 64 bit for the personal one, but I really didn't want to go through the trouble of hunting down immature drivers for this machine's hardware for XP x64 edition, so I just went with Vista Business x64 instead. It's most likely due to the fact that I was getting impatient with the OS installations. My boss had us order the machines with no OS, so unlike most of you with these machines, when we got ours, I had to take to building a gold image for the first partition, using Vista Business x64 on 40 of the 160GB (RAID-1) that was available. Ours didn't go from the box to gaming immediately. Then, after I got that nailed down, and imaged to the other machine, and pushed to the domain, and checked that profiles were setup correctly, and logon scripts were mapping the drives correctly, then I got to move on to my personal partition. When I loaded XP x64, then got the "unsupported operating system" error from the autorun on the Sager driver disk...I kind of just said "AWWWWW....F-IT!" and went with Vista Business x64 on the personal partition too....tired of not playing games already!

I've got STALKER installed (was going to play through it again), but need to move The Witcher (Chapter IV is where I'm at on my home machine), Race07 (5th race of a career), and BioShock (I got stuck somewhere and moved onto The Witcher...need to finish it) over to the laptop, and take some FRAPS movies and caps and add them into the mix.

I can't believe I'm seeing people with over 10k in 3dMark06, but most of them seem to be on a flavor of XP with RAID-0, which is a bummer. We're thinking of going to 8GB on this machine, if we can get confirmation from Sager (we ordered direct) that the machine will suupport it. We also intend to drop in a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD burner drive (or Super multi-format) when they get cheaper. We are also actively hunting a 320GB 2.5" SATA drive for realtively cheap to throw into bay #3 as a storage drive, as what I really want to do on the business side of the machine is run a few different flavors of virtual machine servers and play with them.

i just got 2 160gb 7200rpm drives to run raid 0 in my lappy. urs still dwarfs mine though :D

FRAPS averages between 35-65FPS during normal gameplay. Resolution set is 1920x1200, on High detail, and I'm running under Vista Business x64.

how much does that laptop weigh and is there a way u can find out the cpu temp?

The laptop itself is 11.5lbs without the AC adapter, and 15lbs with. I would love to get some CPU temp information, but Intel TAT, Speedfan, Everest, CoreTemp, and all my other programs refuse to read the information, because I am running Vista Business x64 edition.
