It would seem that Electronic Arts is not too thrilled with a recent report full of inaccuracies and flat out false statements about one of its games. EA’s Vice President of Communications has asked Fox to correct the news show that claimed the game contained “full frontal nudity,” the ability to engage in “graphic sex” and is “marketed to kids.”

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows? This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

You can see the whole thing on YouTube (yes, it is work safe). All you see is a side shot of a digital naked hip / side of a butt. Day time soap operas are XXX rated compared to this stuff.

As much as I am not a huge fan of EA, I couldnt agree more with their stance on this situation. At least they are trying to the info changed on good faith instead of going full force and saying will sue the pants off of you unless you correct this error. As stated in the article this will occur more frequently as the number of people watching TV will lessen as they turn to games for entertainment purposes. The sheer misinformation that goes along with the gaming industry is simply staggering and hard to imagine, all these law makers passing judgment on them not having played a single minuet of the game(s) in question. Good for EA and we will see if anything is actually done about the misinformation that was given.

No one should be at all surprised that Fox misreported this, and sensationalized the whole thing way beyond anything sensible.

faux news has the problem of being bought and paid for by a neo conservative political agenda, thats why games are evil, war is good, ron paul is bad, less privacy is good.

Their journalism has become so yellow it's like watching distorted reality...the only sick part is that people buy it because it's "the news" and so lies become truth...

how many fights between parents and their kids do you think started over that news report....if its anything like where i grew up i promise you there were large family arguements where kids were accused of having something bad based on lies and the parents (much like my own) would not hear a word edgewise even though the overwhelming evidence to the contrary was present...

in a word...faux news sucks

After watching the clip, I am completely disgusted and realize why I don't watch Fox News.

The "Psychologist / Expert" was complaining about the website asking for your age before you enter, but adult sites have the same exact system set up so how is it different?

The panel of retards at the end angered me. Who do you think makes having sex look "cool"? The media...the one idiot said that the government has to set up some form of restricting process for the internet and video games, but not television?

Also how does the host know that it is like watching a "full feature film" when two minutes ago she admitted to never playing the game.

The ESRB????? The ESRB is a joke.

Any one with a bit of sense realizes the video game "companies" don't give a rat's ass about the ESRB. That's just something they created to fend off negative public opinion. And "many" retailers don't enforce the ESRB. Unless they get caught.

Hollow laugh… Everyone’s favorite retail whipping boy, Wal-Mart is one of the few that do.

The bottom line is that it's all about the almighty dollar. Wall Street doesn't recognize morality, unless the government makes them. Investors only want returns, and quick ones at that, they don’t give a shit if some 12 year old buys "Attack of the Pervo Killer Transvestite Transsexuals - PT X", unless it's THEIR kid. Same thing with retailers and the game companies. All the good will in the world does not pay the bills.

All the crying and moaning about PPP (Piss-Poor-Parenting) is avoiding the issue. Some things are simply not acceptable for children, and if it is sold in a public environment, (not the black market), it is the responsibility of the Retailer AND the Producer or Distributor to see that a minor has no access to said product.

We don't leave the sale of alcohol, tobacco, guns or sexually explicit material to the good will of the people thinking with their wallets. We don’t expect parents to have to follow their children around to see if they haven’t bought prohibited items. We expect people selling merchandise for adults to obey the law and not sell to minors. When they don’t, they get their asses rightfully in trouble.

What does the ESRB have to do with this discussion? I think the ESRB does a pretty good job at rating game content.

What I don't understand is why society in general considers sex to be a more adult theme than graphic violence despite the fact that a massive portion of the teenage population is sexually active.

I've been boycotting Fox for awhile now because of their political views, even though I love Family Guy.

What does the ESRB have to do with it? This is what:

FNC reporter says: "Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."

Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.

Wow, just saw the FOX news clip! Holy shit! These are the most uninformed, ridiculously stupid people i have ever seen on a news network. Unbelieveable.

gdem7, I meant that you're the only one who seems to be bashing the ESRB. I think they do a good job at fairly and accurately rating games. I've been asked God knows how many times if I'm 18 while buying an M-rated game at Walmart or Gamestop, even though there aren't any laws preventing a person under 18 from doing so.

Most stores refuse to carry A rated games and those that do will not sell them to minors.

I don't understand why you think they're a joke and "they're in the pocket of the game companies." The ESRB is a great example of a good rating system.

I hope the republican gamers and members here that have held so vehemently to Fox's news-worthyness start to notice the same lack of substantiation and facts that the rest of the news circuit quips about with respect to Fox's un-orthodox pseudo-reporting and that permeate their reporting dogma not just in this story, but ALL stories.

Somehow the news channels Fox labels as "liberal biased" never felt the need to smear political candidates with absolute, proven, recorded, and abhorred lies... or label all the mac convention attendees as yuppy liberals when its a fact that you'd have to be privileged to buy something and ignore the bang-for-buck ratios the way mac users do... (ok, sorry, i couldn't resist that last one)

I hope you stand up and notice the lack of fact checking, the dogma and irrationality of the reporters, and the absolute lack of quality in the news reports which have become known for their jerry springer-like bating antics, hate pandering, fear mongering, partisan flame fanning, and outright absolutely wrong reporting with not only lack of fact checking, but fake facts put in to give it that bias spin.

There is so much there for a libel suit considering that almost everything they said were lies... they DID get the name right but that was it.

I am SO glad that EA has their back up over this, it means that from now on the guns are out and the companies are ready to correct and slap these idiots down.

OK now that I am staring in EA's direction, can we please get a new Nascar sim for the PC, revisit the wing commander universe or even a sequel to strike commander.

I also want Vulcans glory to be put out since it was almost all done, what the hell I can dream can't I?

No one here actually expects Fox News to broadcast something truthful, do they? If so, they need to put down the crackpipe.

This is par for the course for "fair and balanced" Faux Noose.

Talking about how ridiculous FOX is only means their plan worked. Media corporations thrive on public awareness; how aware would the people in this forum have been of them if they didn't create a story deliberately engineered to rattle as many cages as possible?

etc.etc.etc

LoL, The last time i went to Walmart to buy a game with a friend(over a year ago) the guy at the counter wouldn't let me purchase a M rated game even when i was 17 and had a valid ID. Why? Because he couldn't do the math! It had my birthdate and it said when i would turn 21. Doing the math on either one would have been proof enough. Eventually i just gave up and we had to call up my friends mom ,who was on the other side of the store, to give the guy permission. It was so embarrassing, she was shopping for bras and purchased them right there along with the game.

But to get back on topic:
Reading the response by EA's VP made me smile. It just did.

If you look at the two (two as far as I know) scenes in the game, Fox really isn't exaggerating much if any at all. The scenes are rather odd. The two alien chick things have lesbian sex and they show fully naked butt and back, and about 3/4 of the boob. It is definitely an elicit sex scene if you look at it. Just the body language alone is very erotic.

Wow do you work for fox? The sex scenes are less than what you would get from watching fox news itself: http://foxnewsporn.com/videos.php

No. I could really care less. I'm just pointing out the obvious. The statements are slightly exaggerated, but they look fairly straight forward to me from what I'm seeing in the video game. I don't play console games or even care if there is nudity in them.

I haven't really seen or played Mass Effect, nor do I care to investigate further. I do know, however, that whatever Fox News claims or portrays is 100% false.

I can't even think of a proper response to the garbage that was reported on Mass Effect. Mass Effect uses a mature, quasi-realistic intimacy between two characters only to further relationship building in the game. As stated before these scenes are far less then the television my fellow Canadians see on our channels, and is tasteful in every manner of the word. I must admit that It was odd to see, but if we are going to take video games seriously as a dramatic, cinematic medium for story telling... I wouldn't in any way be disgusted or put off by it. It is also, far from being outside the rating of M, which is clearly smacked on the box.

No edit?

Even though I don't agree with money grubbing EA in most circumstances. I feel they really stepped up to the plate to defend their newly acquired development team and hope that they continue to support and back up their teams. I also hope that this is a sign of them smartening up their act and cutting out the rest of the bullshit they pull. But, this is a good start.

Fox and news don't deserve to be used in the same sentence. They just take their marching orders from the conglomerate of media/political/ect. elitists called the Council on Foreign Relations who dictate what America sees and hears.

lol don't believe me, see for yourself:

All this other drivel aside, Fox has been sliding into the gutter for a while now. I'm not just talking about whether they are conservative or liberal. Fox has just plain tossed truth and accuracy out the windows for whatever their own internal management pushes as an agenda.

It's pretty sick to watch. CNN is easy to peg, you know right where their left-leaning bias is but Fox has been pretty decent for quite a few years and watching this strange abandonment of its neutral positions in favor of God-knows-what they will do next makes them seem more like a tabloid than a news channel.

All I have to say is Fox (and others) better watch what they say as the game makers now have enough clout to shut them up!;)

I agree to some extent, but PPP as you call it plays in here big. I have a feeling if we at least had a law that required the retailers card, just like for alcohol, then they'd start doing it. Rating something as 18 ONLY means these stores would stop selling it to acheive their 'family' image and effectively kill the sales of the game. Its a big shot at censoring, when the games are far less provacative compared to movies and other forms of media. Picking it out of the lineup seems targeted to a stereotype. Parents BUY this shit for their kids too, so it isn't always the situation of the kid buying it for themselves, in fact I believe that is actually the rare case. Whats more, if retailers were required to card via a law with stiff penalties, then I have a feeling when a parent is carded they might ask WHY they had to show an ID because of the rating of the game.

I guess you think CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, etc. is real news huh? OMG, talk abotu nothing but lies and stuff made up just to generate attention. They are 100,000 times worst than Fox News. The number of viewers proves it. CNN, etc. are almost devoid of any viewrs at all according the numbers. Just a bunch of left wing lunatics that love Al-Qaeda and hate America.

nope, i completely agree with you that all of mainstream media is garbage, they are all spin factories owned by the various political faction to push an agenda on the general populace who sadly is either not smart enough or too misinformed to look elsewhere for their news or draw their own conclusions.

if the news is on tv you don't have to pay extra for i'd question it, in fact unless i see it for myself i will still question it. media propaganda exists everywhere for everyones alter agenda.

and left wing and right wing are all the same, both want to destroy america and bring about total control via media manipulation.
