For AVI I say each letter and for ISO I read it as if it was a word.

I've always wondered the same about SLI, do people say it like sly?

I say "sly".

And if someone said "avee" to me I would have absolutely no idea what they were talking about.

I say A-V-I and S-L-I, but I say ISO instead of I-S-O because it doesn't sound awful when said as a word. I say I-S-O if I mean the organization that creates all the standards.

A-V-I spelled out i dont just say "I-S-O", ive started saying , dot-I-S-O. like .iso

IDK WHY.. lol

Back in the day I had a friend who's dad said he bought a brand new "altanon" processor. He also said he was going to "serve the internet". LOL

I say A.V.I. and I.S.O.

About the only acronym I pronounce is SCSI (scuzzy), JPG (jay-peg), and MPG (em-peg).

My boss say "sequel" when talking about SQL. It throws me off and makes me stop her and ask her to repeat herself because I grew up saying S.Q.L. lol

I LOL'd at this thread! Good read!

I say M.P.3 ... how else will you say it? lol

What about these?

exe - "executable file" is what I say
zip - "zip" is what I say
rar - "RRRAAAAWWWRR" is what i say, i even use my hands like a monster
info - i say "info"
txt - i say "text document" or "dot t.x.t"

ISO - "eye-soo" (because if you spelled it out fast, it would still sound like "eye-soo"
AVI - "A.V.I."
SLI - "S.L.I." (i know people who say SLY or SLEE . it makes my spine shudder)
MPEG/JPEG - "No Brainer"
MP3 - "M.P.3."
SCSI - "skuzzy"
/ETC - "et-see"

I voted A.V.I. and I.S.O, but that's in my mind. If I were to say them, I'd say A.V.I. and Eye-so.

.gif

Is it giff, jiff, or G.I.F.?

Each option sounds silly. I try to avoid it the best I can.

I've always said GIF like JIFF. The creators of the format also call it that.

Choosy developers choose GIF. :p

I also say the letters of PNG, but I have heard people say 'ping.'

I pronounce GIF with a hard G... because it's Graphics Interchange Format

I pronounce JPG with a normal J sound... because it's Joint Photographic Experts Group

Because they are both image formats, but with a different first letter... I choose to pronounce them differently.

Dido, but they are known as "seqel" servers :)

ISO is an image format, not a word, same with AVI.

I say "A.V.I." and "Iso" (I notice that the votes for ISO add up to over 100%, I guess some people say both?)

EXE = "Exy" ("dot exy", an "exy file")
ZIP = "Zip"
RAR = "Rar"
GIF = "Gif", with a hard G, rhymes with Jiff and sounds like "Gift" without the t.
JPG, JPEG = "Jay-peg"
MPG = "Em-peg"
PNG = "P.N.G."
SQL = I vary; I'd certainly use "S.Q.L." for the language, but I would refer to "Microsoft Sequel Server" most of the time (but might sometimes say "S.Q.L. Server"). MySQL is correctly "My S.Q.L." I think?
SLI = "S.L.I."
SCSI = "Scuzzy"
SATA = "Satta"
HID (Human Interface Device) = "Hid"
GUI = "Gooey"
GUID = "G.U.I.D."
ECMAScript = "Eckma Script" (not that I say that often..)
Apache Server = "A patchy server" (deliberately named that way!)

A-V-I and I-S-O. I called them -I-S-O before I ever heard someone say it as a word. It was too late then, I'm a creature of habit.

What about SATA and PATA? These I have a hard time with. I think SAT-AH sounds kinda lame, and PAT-AH sounds even worse.

I do:
SATA - Serial A-T-A
PATA - I dodge it and say I-D-E :p

What are your takes on this?

Nice thread BTW.

I alternate between A-V-I and "a-vee".
I say ISO as "eye-so"
I say GIF as "giff"
I pronounce GUI as "gooey"

I state PCMCIA as "pick em', CIA" :D
j/k

Quick edit: Wait, what does this have to do with software?

Funny thread here's my input:

avi = spelled out A.V.I.
iso = word i-so
exe = why would you even say this as a word? lol, spelled out for me
rar = rare or rawr but I try to avoid saying the latter
sli = spelled out sli
sata = I'm inclined to say satta but I've been trying to get used to say-da
pata = as someone pointed out already i.d.e.
sql = both s.q.l. and sequel just depends on my mood
gui = I started out saying gwee but have since learned and started to say gooey

And here's my contribution to the list, how would you say wifi? I suspect most people would pronounce it (why f-eye) but does anyone say (wee fee)? heh

Random extensions and abbreviations...

avi = A.V.I.
iso = "eye so"
ogg = "ah-g"
ascii = "as key"
scsi = "scuzzy"
asp = A.S.P.
sql = generally it's "sequel" for SQL Server, and S.Q.L. for the language itself (not sure why)
gif = "gif" ... it's a "g" not a "j"

A pet peeve is hearing people pronounce the ".asp" extension as the word "asp". That also applies for those pronouncing ".aspx" as "asp-ex".

I call SATA serial ATA my dad calls it say-ta

i say ISO ice-oh and avi as a v i

I have a pet peeve that I cannot stand people who say GUI as gooey.... I just say G.U.I... haha. I also say I SO and i call exe files a dot E.X.E. file... and SATA I call serial ATA... and SQL I say S.Q.L... I say SLI.... S.L.I.... I love acronyms
