Sorry for the slightly OT post, but how do the ram pads keep up when removing the stock cooler of the 4870 to apply fresh paste? I would like to remove the cooler and apply MX-2, but if the ram pads get destroyed it worries me that my ram will then become too hot even if my gpu itself is cooler. I have wanted to do this on my current 8800 Ultra, but many have said the ram pads tear and get real thin and don't work as well, so I never bothered.

I just want to be sure nothing will go wrong if doing a thermal paste change (as long as done correctly of course). I am sure some fresh MX-2 with a Thermalright HR-11 installed on the back, with a fan speed bump would work wonders on this card.

The ram pads on the cooler are one giant pad. Both of my coolers came off and didnt affect the ram pads at all.

Great, thanks for the reply. So there isn't little, individual square pads on each of the chips separately? That is how I am always used to seeing it be done. Would just hate to have my card heated up, take off the cover and have the pads rip, tear and thin out. Then I am screwed.

My 4870's in CrossfireX tend to stay around ~10c degrees apart, sometimes more during full load.

Lots of truth in this thread. ;)

Why would anyone brag about their temperature?

I made this thread so ppl can get an idea of how hot the card runs under different setting/set-up, of course I am curious about it myself. Still waiting for my slim fan for HR-03 to arrive. :D

Comments: Current using Rivatuner 2.10 for Fan Control and 8.8 Cat's. Really working well so far. Fan set to default at 30% (<53), The varies from 36% at 53-58 to 42% at 59-61, I also have additonal Fan Profiles all the way up to 100% however the only time I've hit the next highes, 48% at 62-65, is with Furmark. I'm still monitoring and tweaking however It works pretty good at current settings. I've also slightly under-clocked my card from stock 800/1100 to 775/1000. I was not having any problems however by underclocking a little I lost no noticable performance (I game at 1680x1050) but dropped temps a few more degree's.

Comments: The amount of heat these things put out at idle is ridiculous. I'm waiting on the Thermalright T-Rad2 to come out. I would go with an Nvidia GTX 280, but there aren't any good stock coolers coming out that I know of. Right now, even sitting at idle, the fan will spin up a little every minute or two for a few seconds like a gust of wind - lol.

Memory temps are what we should be talking about.

Sapphire 4870 1gb - Stock (750/900)
GPU idle: 45 C
GPU load: 77
MEMIO load: 93 C (max), 88 C (average)
Fan max: ~60%
~30 C ambient for the house, ~40 C Case temp

Will you guys post some memory temps + ambient temps?

should also note that when I first got my 4870, it was idling around 45C @ 40% fan speed. might be due to difference in season, but 10C seems like a substantial change

RBE Mod to downvolt the GPU when it's idle, the VRAM runs the same speed all the time, I don't like flickering. My card uses a custom black cooler with silver heatpipes which ressemble the HD 4870 VaporX

Idle: 59C
Load: 78C
Furmark or OCCT: 90C

At a room temperature of 84F.

4870 512 with reference cooler and a room temp of 72-75F.
idle 47c @ 50% fan speed
furmark 73c @ 100% fan speed

I changed the fan behavior to 50% at idle and 100% on 3d app detection. I use headphones when I game so the noise @ 100% fan speed is no big deal to me.
