Wish they would do the same thing for the HD 4870. Release one with the same cooler, 1GB ram, and clocked @ 800-830 on the core.

ZZF says in-stock for me. Sorta pricey for the normal version, can get a 4850 and slap on an Akasa cooler for less...

Looks like one of the better 4850 coolers so far. This one will actually push the hot air out of the case instead of just dumping it at the CPU and other components :)

Just got one ordered from ZZF.

Had to go with the 4850 ICEQ or 4870 for htpc.
Could not have all that heat dump into the case.

My 4870 runs 20C cooler at full load then my 4850 stock.
(4870 51C full load - 4850 71C full load)

Cooler makes all the difference. Hoping to have good results with this one.

I got this card today .. and wow...best 4850 I have seen.

Fully loaded with F@H and temps around 55C.

Fan is very very quiet, even at 75% or 85% .. it is very quiet, almost thought it was broken,.
HIS has a great product here. Highly recommended.!

EvilAlchemist: thanks for the info about the noise, just what I wanted to know before purchasing this card!

One question: does it make any noticeable noise when booting up the system?

I don't mind a brief whirring, but I had a Palit 9600GT Sonic that sounded like a blow dryer for a good 30 seconds until windows loaded (had to return the card because of this). Not cool for a comp that sits in my living room next to my TV!

a 4850 with 1G of ram? what a waste, i dont think it could use 1G of ram could it?

I like the design of the cooler.

What kind of GDDR3 did HIS go with? Is it high quality Samsung stuff that can OC to 1200mhz np?

It it's a turbo model IMO they should put some decent GDDR3 ram on it.

I'm pretty sure it is standard GDDR3 rated at 1.0ns (i.e. 1,000MHz -> 2,000 effective rate), otherwise why not up the memory speed... this is the main bottleneck for the 4850 after all! I had a good link comparing increase in core clock to increase in memory clock (can't find it now tho!), and increasing the memory bandwidth scaled performance a LOT better...

I know some other manufacturers are using the good GDDR3... The Gainward GS for example uses 0.8ns clocked at 1,100/2,200Mhz.

One question: does it make any noticeable noise when booting up the system?

If it does, I can not hear it at all.
I have rebooted it about 10 times , and never it spin up to ful speed.
I think at boot the fan runs at about 50%, when windows kicks in, i see it go up to the speed I have set of 75%, but to be honest, it seems to work great even at 50% fan speed.

Everytime I think it is broke, cause I hear nothing, but it is running, and air is coming out the back and CCC says 55C at full load, so working exactly like it should.

I have never been happier with a card preformance.

Fantastic, thanks for your reply... I'll pick up my card today!

The first thing I'll do is change the voltage & underclock settings for idle/2d mode... makes up to 45W difference on 4870 so probably good gains for 4850 too (and without flickering caused by GDDR5 memory issue, I think GDDR3 can change clock speed without interruption). This can be done without modding the BIOS too, with Ati Tray Tools (ATT). See this thread for details (third post, by nafets):

Now I have my card so I can give a first hand impression...

* The HIS IceQ4 4850 Turbo is effectively silent during system boot/startup, and in idle mode in Windows XP.

Next to my other relatively quiet components (CPU and DVD drive) it was difficult to distinguish any noise coming from the card. Some quick 3D tests didn't cause any increase in noise.

Full marks for HIS for producing a whisper quiet card... next on my agenda:
1) Load testing under 3D, to see how sound levels hold up.
2) Under clocking for 2D mode... big power savings available in idle with a little tweaking.

Edit: btw. it idles at ~50 degrees C... WIN!
