Today, August 31st, 2008 marks the 13th anniversary of the storied Command & Conquer franchise, which has sold over 25 million copies to date. And to celebrate this milestone and this October's highly anticipated return to the world of Red Alert with Red Alert 3, we are giving away one of the original games that started it all, Command & Conquer Red Alert, for FREE.

Man, I did not realize how old this game was. It doesn't even run under XP without a patch, much less Vista 64. Come to think of it, now I feel really old. I remember playing the crap out of RA when it was first released. :(

I remember playing the crap out of the original C&C when it was released... God, I'm ancient! :p:cool:

yeah, give your friend a disk and have late-night battle on a 28.8 modem

for single-player, i ccedit -ed the crap out of it. mammoth production in 1 sec, with indestructible armor and whatever weapons i wanted...

Meh, I got this game still in my games binder. I thought this was a download for RA3. Got a bit excited there for a min ;)

The download is still available today. Will try it on Vista x64 after the second disc finishes.

edit: looks like it is based on a 16-bit installer. I'm going to try installing it in a 32-bit XP VM later and then copy it back to x64.

I saw this on SD yesterday and d/l'ed it (about 1 GB worth between the 2 .rar files). I've read mixed exp. on people trying to install on Windows XP; Vista is even trickier. I'll try to install it whenever I get around to it. :p

I'm downloading it now. I'll report in with my results. Vista Ultimate 64-bit

The DOS version runs best in a Win98 VM on VirtualPC 2007 under Vista x64. Scrolling around the play field is very slow, so I can't say it's completely playable. Sound and video seem to work great. The best bet is to just run it under a 32-bit OS.

I've given up trying to run it under Vista x64. Maybe DOSBox or another light-weight VM can do better. I'll just run it on another computer with XP.

this still works for anyone who didnt get a chance to download it
