Hey guys,

Now I know everyone is going to say, 3dmark 2006 scores are useless and to just go play a real game, but i'm just curious about my results. I am more than content with my 4870x2s performance in games.

I hear everyone getting at least 20,000 marks with a OC'ed C2Q system, similar drivers, similar OS etc.etc kind of setup. With a similarly specced system I get about 18000 max. Anyone else on here getting similar numbers? And If so, what did you do to increase your score? It'd be nice if I knew my vidcard was performing as good as the majority of the 4870x2 owners. (it's a mental thing)

I made sure AA/AF were not on, vsync is off, and catalyst AI is on

QX6850 @ 400x9
gigabyte ep45-ds3r
4gb g-skill
Visiontek 4870x2 stock
Corsair TX750
Vista X64
8.9 drivers (8.8b were lower)

Same damn score on a 8 core system on heavy oc... on a E6750 @ 500x7 I pulled 17865. I saw those scores too and that pissed me off a bit. I guess its me and you in this "mental thing"

I get about 13345 on my visiontek 4870x2 paired up with an E4500 @ 2.93ghz GA-EP45-DS3L. 8.10s dropped my score a bit. I was at 13400. This seems about right considering the CPU im using

Now the majority of people I've read either have over 20k, or have 15k or less, 15k or less leads me to suspect some other issues, because when I disable Catalyst AI I get around 15k.

Still..pretty friggen' frustrating regardless.

Yeah it is but 3dmark06 is heavily cpu dependent. I can really care less what some benchmark says vs in game performance. I can run COD4 at 1920x1200 all maxed out around 90-95fps. I never really see it dip below 60fps. So I'm quite happy.

I got around 14k on my 4870 x2 with my Q6600 at stock speeds. When I went to 3ghz, it bumped my score up to around 17k. When I went to 3.2, it rose to 18k. When I got to 3.6, I just barely edged out 20k by getting 20,002.

This is all with the latest chipset/audio/network/etc drivers for my motherboard, fresh copy of Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 with all hotfixes installed, and the Cat 8.10 Beta 1 drivers.

As for power, I have a Tagan 700w modular psu feeding this system.

I hit just shy of 19k with my setup, 20k if i up the cpu to 4.0
I had an e6600 at 3.4 and 975x board and it was getting 15k

I had many PSU issues with a BFG 800 watt. Scores were sporadic and sometimes the system would even cut off. Upgraded to 1KW Antec and it runs like a dream now.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people aren't getting enough power to the card.

Its all about cpu. I cant hit 18k with my system in my sig except my cpu has to be clocked to 3.57GHz. Obviously your 4870x2 is a lot faster than my crossfired 3870's in real game performance.

Score: 18091
SM2: 7322
SM3: 8367
CPU: 5027

I get 20,937 with my Diamond 4870X2 OC edition at stock speeds. But yeah, 06 is really CPU dependent. I'm getting close to 6,000 with my CPU score alone with my quad at 3.66. Come on Yang, let's see that score. You're one of the people with the same exact GPU as myself.

I'm going to install 8.10 tonight and see if that makes any difference.

Just installed the 8.10 finals and scored 20,201. It blows my mind that this system is running on ALL cylinders right out of the box with very minimal tweaking done to it. Up until now, all of my systems have underperformed without some sort of bios tweaking/optimization done to it.

Now to skew from 3dmark06 for a bit...

After overclocking my Q6600 to 3.6ghz, not only is this system scoring 20k, but it is also absolutely raping Crysis on Ultra High (custom config) at 1600x1200. I'm getting 40fps avg in scenes like this:

and this...

ScreenShot0004.jpg

And it stays in the 30's even during heavy action scenes. It didn't when my cpu was running at 3ghz or even 3.2ghz. It was dipping into the 20's quite a bit more, to the point that I wasn't comfortable with it. It still dips into the 20's occasionally with the 3.6ghz, but not enough to be noticeable. I can't wait to see how it does when I get my Q9650 and clock it to 4ghz...

So, if any potential x2 buyers are reading this thread and wondering if a 4870x2 is overkill for lower resolutions, it's not. Not if you want maximum eyecandy (with any game with maxed out AA and AF, not just Crysis on Ultra High) with high framerates... Just be sure you have at least a decently clocked C2Q if not a highly overclocked C2D to minimize the cpu bottlenecking at the lower resolutions.

The above is just an example that this card can do amazing things when it's coupled with a high performing cpu.

it'd be nice if I could permanently forget about this program :) I know everyone says it's cpu limited, but that doesn't explain how me running @ 3.6 and someone else running at 3.6 is such a big difference.

I've gotta start comparing me some game benchmarks me thinks!
