Avivo video converter thread

I guess that it is better for me to start a new thread just for this. With the latest 8.12 catalyst, you can now convert videos using your ATI GPU.

To use the converter, you need to install the latest Catalyst 8.12 and the 8.12 Avivo Package found under "Additional Downloads" on AMD website. To open the program, go to Catalyst Control Centre and use Basic view, you will find Avivo Video Converter there.

I've tried using it and it is really fast on my HD 4870 X2 even when compared to my 3.2GHz quad core. The converter is still not perfect and I came across some problems with the program.

One of the problems is the converter doesn't support some formats or video files. Sometimes you will get an error message saying that the file is not supported. Sometimes the program would convert the file but in the end you will only get a sound without pictures when you open the converted file.

Another problem that I came across when using the converter is my GPU clock would stay at 3D clock even after the conversion is finished. The solution that I found to drop the 3D clock back to 2D clock is by logging off the computer and then log back in. Even loading a game and quit won't do the job. If you didn't use the converter beforehand, the 3D clock would drop back to 2D clock just fine after you quit the games.

Edit: I joined the webcast with David Nalasco from AMD and asked about the the formats and codecs supported. He said that the formats are listed in the release note but I have found nothing yet in the release note. He also mentioned that the converter supports H.264 and MPEG 2 on the input side.

You can view the webcast from today here:

Just click on the on demand library to find the ATI Stream video.

The 3d Clocks issues worries me, as I have setup fan profiles accordingly, and at the moment is not enough to cool the card when running in 3d mode.

I tried to convert some mpeg into dvd and other formats can't seem to get it to offload to the video card. What it converted looked really bad. Also it doesn't report the final file size correctly so I don't know how big it's going to be.

I tried multiple times, after successfully getting one to convert (after multiple crashes) it finally converted. it was fast but the video came out tiny. Maybe I am missing a setting somewhere? I chose the DVD option.

Just noticed the notes next to the Avivo Converter:

"Avivo Video Converter*
*Avivo Video Converter will only work
with X1000 series products "

What is up with that?

That's what I saw too. I used to use it on my old X1800 and the quality was iffy. It seemed to install right with the HD4850. However, anything I try to transcode seems to crash. From what I'm seeing it's probably not the best solution available. I somewhat wish they would've made a new interface rather than just porting the old AVIVO converter to CAL.

I'll stick with AutoMKV w/ x264 with a Q6600. Hopefully the guys will make a stream processing version of it though I doubt it will happen soon.

Make sure that you downloaded the 8.12 Avivo Package. I don't get the crash but not all videos work with the converter, xvid and divx are not supported and David Nalasco said that he can't comment on future format support.

I downloaded the AVIVO package offered here (despite having a conflicting description):

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista64/common-vista64

I tried converting a WMV to iPod and it will just fail. I've used AVIVO converter in the past so none of the installation procedures or usage instructions is new. Though, having Catalyst Host Application (or something along those lines) crash as soon as I start converting is new.

-Dies if you cancel the conversion.

-Very picky about source. Won't even take the .Dat taken from VCDs which are just MPEG1's.

How do you even start the converter? I installed the Avivo package and there are no conversion menus or options in the CCC and there's no Avivo program folder or anything.

Mine was fine when I clicked Cancel. And you can just rename the .DAT to .MPG and it'll convert just fine.

I tested Avivo again earlier today. It definitely does make use of the GPU just not as much as I figured it would. Both my GPU's capped at 30% but it does work. Hopefully more is offloaded to the GPU in later drivers.

Did a conversion of a 100MB wmv to a 30MB mpeg2 in 38 seconds. Worked pretty well for me.
