LCD for PS3? (Dell 2209WA?)

Hi Folks,

I want to get a PS3 and I'm looking for a LCD to go with it. For years I've been only using whatever display my laptop had and I thought it's time to switch to something bigger.

I'd prefer 22" than 24" because I move often and 22" would be nicer to deal with. After some reading, I came to the conclusion that 2209WA from Dell is the one to get.

The only question that remains - how will it get along with PS3?

Since the native resolution is 1680x1050 I know I can't get full HD (but I don't care).

What I want to know is: can I feed it 1080p and will it correctly downscale it to fit the native resolution frame? I.e. will it have black bars on top and bottom and preserve 16:9 aspect ratio?

I've read that 2209WA doesn't have 1:1 scaling, but that wouldn't help here, wouldn't it? Displaying full hd in 1:1 would crop the image, right?

So, what is the thing that I should be looking for? And does 2209WA have it?

The Dell 2209WA should work with the PS3, and from what I've read, it will accept and downscale a 1080p signal. The problem is it doesn't have aspect scaling, so it can't preserve the aspect ratio. The image will be slightly stretched without black bars.

You're right that 1:1 scaling wouldn't help here. People keep saying they want 1:1 mapping when most people really want aspect scaling. On a 24" 1920x1200 monitor, aspect scaling would be the same as 1:1 mapping for 1080p as long as there's no overscan.

I had originally considered the Dell 2209WA to go with my PS3 using an HDMI-DVI converter, but it would have stretched the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 16:10.

I ended up getting a Dell S2409W which admittedly uses a TN panel, but still looks great for gaming on my PS3 and since it has 16:9 native resolution I don't have to worry about aspect scaling plus it has an HDMI port.

BenQ's E2200HD is 16:9 ratio and has full 1080p so its compatible with consoles! From what I've read BenQ's are pretty reliable. Check em out.

Playing console games stretched vertically on a 16:10 isn't that bad, it's harder to notice the proportions are not correct when playing video games. When watching tv or movies you can tell right away something is amiss. At least this is what I've noticed personally.

Is there no 22-incher that will scale 1080p input properly?

Unfortunately it's impossible to find any info about this issue.

But I've read that it works for some people.

(Stupid Sony! How hard would it be to make PS3 output those few extra pixels... Xbox 360 can do it...)

As has been mentioned, the BenQ E2200HD. They make good quality products.

Yes, BenQ might be an option. But I would still prefer 16:10 aspect ratio. I really wanted this Dell, but I want the PS3 to work well too. (although I want to use it for PS3, it will also be my work monitor)

Unfortunately there are not many IPS panels out there!

Here are options that work and preserve correct aspect ratio of 16:9 with PS3 under $600.00 US at 22 and 24 sizes:

1) HP LP2475W
2) Dell 2408WFP
3) Samsung T220HD and T240HD (non HD versions stretch to 16:10)
4) BenQ V2400W, G2400WD, E2400HD, E2200HD (not a big fan of the E2200HD though, sorry)
5) Dell S2409W (same panel as BenQ E2400HD I believe)

I believe all of these have an HDMI input to allow you to simultaneously connect PC and PS3. This is the other issue with the 2209WA, you would need an HDMI or DVI switch.

Also, any panel that is 1920x1080 resolution should work even if it stretches everything to full screen, so I know there are some Acers at BB and other Brick/mortar stores that should work too.

It's really the 1920x1200 and 1680x1050 monitors that you have to look out for whether they support proper 16:9 or not.

Unfortunately, other than the HP above, none are IPS panels, and the only one with somewhat similar quality and viewing angles would be the Dell 2408WFP, which is an S-PVA.

What about the newer LG W2220P? It is almost like Dell, and has HDMI too, does it handle 16:9 for ps3?

I have the Dell and I must say I never used it for gaming until lately and I've had it for a good half a year, mainly because I have a 46" Sony XBR4. However I started playing SF4 and I really notice a lot less input lag. The scaling on the other hand was not noticeable so I'd totally recommend it.

Might want to check out the HP zr22w. Full 1080p and its 21.5 inches.

Thanks, I had somehow missed that one. Still a bit more expensive than the ViewSonic VP2365WB which uses the same 1920x1080 panel as the NEC MultiSync EA231WMi.

There is also the Samsung F2380 (23" @ 1920x1080), which is cPVA. I'm unsure as to whether it's little brother, the F2080 (20" @ 1600x900), actually can downscale 1080p or if it upscales 720p (I believe most PS3 games are still limited to 720p anyway).
