E3 Returns to Flashy Former Format
E3’s attempt to be a low-key and “serious” gaming conference resulted in dropped attendance and publisher withdrawals. This year’s E3 returns to the high-energy and glitzy presentation of their more successful past and Reuters takes a look at the event, which is set to kick off Monday.

The gaming biz shouldn't be about being serious. It should be about having fun and doing it BIG! whenever possible

It was a terrible move to make E3 a small invitation only press event.

Whatever moron decided to make the change in the first place needs to be fired.
How could anyone possibly believe it would be a good idea!?

Games = Fun Entertaining, and enjoyable

Tickets cost $500. I'd rather spend that on games, than go to a con ABOUT games.

Thats pretty standard tradeshow fare. The $500 = seeing and playing with unreleased games/gadgets and, now, booth babes.

This is why I hate the world. Why have serious discourse when we can drool over tits all day? Fucking morons.

Suits and numbers do not sell games, nor do they get people interested in them, why would anyone take E3 out of its element?

No kidding. Nothing is ever made better by removing hot, scantily clad, half-naked women.

Whether or not cutting it down worked in that regard is hard to say, but having E3 as big as it was (and apparently will be again) was some of the reason that a lot of people cared about it in the first place, so it's good to see it coming back.

If you want serious, go play Eve, nobody takes gaming as seriously as that soap-operatic bunch.

I was at the last E3 before they terminated the Booth Babes. It was fun. Attendance for the following dry E3 was decent, but the thing was a ghost town every year after that.
Maybe they should lay out some ideas for devs if they don't have a product ready. such as "If your game is no where near ready for demo'ing at the event, just hire some models and put your logo on their pasties, you'll be fine."

My favorite E3s were in 1999 (probably because it was my first), 2000 for the MGS2 trailer, and 2003 when Valve first demonstrated the Half Life 2 and the Source engine (I was fortunate enough to be on the very first showing on the first day). It was the first game engine I'd seen with physics simulation done at that high a level, pretty amazing. Ruined the rest of the show for me, even other bleeding edge games like Doom 3 didn't impress me after that.
![]() It did get kind of old though, so in a weird way I'm glad it took a two year hiatus, maybe this year won't feel as tiresome and "been there done that" as the last few.

Tickets are free for people with entertainment or journalism credentials that registered before May 1st. I don't know anybody that has paid to get on the convention floor at E3, I certainly never have.
