GTX 275 vs GTX 280 at 1920x1080

The 280. Same price, more graphics memory, basically the same core. Personally I'd buy used, though... and if you can, wait. New stuff is right around the corner..
 
New cards from nvidia are looking to be in December at best, and ATI's drivers should be working right with the cards they'll put out in October by then so if you need a card now go for it. There isn't a point in waiting for DX11 cards because there won't be any DX 11 games at launch.

That said, GTX 280.
 
Go for whatever is cheaper. But if prices are the same I would go for 280.
 
Get the 280. The 280 is the same card as the 275 at the gpu core (with the exception all 275s are 55nm and some 280s are 55 some are 65.)

The 280 has a higher memory bandwidth due to more memory and bigger bus. The 275 has the memory bandwidth of a 260.

Now the 275 is clocked a little bit higher than a 280, thing is you should always be able to OC the 280 to similarish clocks of the 275.

At stock speeds a 280 is trading blows with a 275.

Comparison of the two cards. It boils down to this:
GTX 280 has 1GB VRAM vs GTX275 896MB
GTX 280 has 32 ROPs vs GTX 275 28
GTX 275 has higher clocks on all core, shader and memory.
GTX 275 is 55nm vs GTX 280 65nm allowing
1)higher OC head room
2)less temps. less power -> 2x 6pin instead of 6pin + 8pin for GTX 280.

Both cards have their pros and cons but are very similar in performance.
I can't recite but I remember seeing some benchmarks where the 275 is actually faster than GTX 280. The same could be said for GTX 280 too.

All else being equal, GTX 280 still outperforms the GTX 275, even when both are overclocked.
