WD Caviar 1 TB Loud?

I recently replaced my seagate drive with a 1TB caviar black. Whenever I download from usenet (at about 3MB/s) the drive is constantly making writing noises.. like little crunch sounds. However my seagate never did this. Is this normal?

Yes. My Caviar Black 1TB is pretty loud as well. That's the norm.

If you have issues with the noise, you can most likely (though I haven't checked if the drive supports it) change the AAM setting for your drive [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Acoustic_Management].

Thank God!!!!!!!!! I used WinAAM and set the drive to the quietest setting (128) and it is SO quiet now. Wow, amazing difference. This program is awesome and very simple. Allows you to adjust the drive noise from 128 or 254.

Glad that you found an AAM program. I haven't tried personally, but I also know that CrystalDiskInfo also has a hidden AAM/APM set feature function.
