Shifts in the Top 500 Supercomputer List

There have been a few changes in the Top500 list of supercomputers after a Cray XT5 supercomputer called "Jaguar" finally wrestled the number one spot away from IBM’s “Roadrunner.”

Quote:
Just as the last time the list was released, the Top500 list is made up mostly of Hewlett-Packard and IBM computers. HP accounted for 210 of this year's 500, and IBM 185. In terms of processors in use, Intel still enjoys the lion's share, with 80 percent. The most popular operating system is Linux, with 90 percent of the Top500.

Of course a Jaguar beat a RoadRunner. They should name the next one after a faster animal.
Cheetah, Tuna, Peregrine Falcon?

Especially since I'm reading that Jaguar is now running 6-cores for every processor they have implemented in this computer. Wow hex came early before we could get our stinking hands on it.

It's pretty remarkable that a couple single core systems are still on the Top 500. It's a pretty good bet they won't when the next list comes out.

dunno.... they probably could pick up a few hundred more (now dirt cheap) singlecore CPU to add to the cluster...

Didn't AMD release their 6 core opteron processor back in June or so? Intel having released their hex core Xeon processors before that?

Oh ya. I guess I was thinking of the desktop market hexacore processors that's yet to be released. You're right.

They could, but I doubt since it wouldn't be an efficient use of their funds unless they were hurting for speed and didn't want to spend $ on a new multi-core system.

But I have a feeling that despite the bad economy, many more systems are going to enter the list and kick those 2 single-core systems out.

That said, I don't know where in the top 500 those 2 single core systems ranked. If in the top 400, then they won't get kicked out anytime soon. But if in the 400s ... bye bye, single cores!
