Top 10 Internet Moments of the Decade

CNN has posted a list of the top ten internet moments of the decade. Some of these “moments” are pretty decent but are these really the top ten?

Quote:
Napster shuts down (2001): Although the controversial file-sharing site bemoaned by many in the recording industry shut down in 2001, the Webbys note that it opened up the floodgates. Hulu, iTunes and other legal sites followed, as did downloading songs from less reputable sites and artists releasing their music exclusively online.

Some of them are pretty "meh". But the last one, pertaining to Twitter's effect on the Iran situation... Is just one instance of what Twitter has been used for recently. Twitter, though I hate it, has become a very effective means of organizing masses. See the RNC protests that were organized by "twits", for example.

Eh, looks like a solid list to me.

Except for the iPhone.

Doesn't belong in an article of this sort, IMO.

They both sold very well, especially Half Life 2, and if they cared to include gaming leaks, they'd have to think leaks for albums, movies, and every other piece of media on the planet.

I don't even remember the Doom 3/Half Life 2 leaks being a HUGE deal.

The last three are bullshit. First, the iphone has little to do with the internet. The presidential election? What? And protests? That's basically just saying "news was available in real time on the internet". ...

Also, I'm pretty sure Google IPO had little to do with the start of YouTube.

Was this list put together by a blind monkey with ADD? There's no common thread among the events posted. The iPhone debut has nothing in common with Google's IPO. It seems to start off as a "Significant events in internet history" and ends up sort of as a "Events that were broadcast over the internet".

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Shitty CNN lists. What about when 4chan voted that random dude the time man of the year? Also, I like how the plug their liberal obama worship into the top 10 internet moments. Fuck you Clinton News Network.

Shitty job thinking. The list was put together by Webby, not CNN, says so on the page. Great as it is to say phrases that really don't make you seem too smart to start like "Fuck you Clinton News Network," you might not want to exacerbate the effect.

That being said, those last three are bullshit. I think we're all in agreement there. Also, I'm not sure how Google IPO changed the net. Google maps arguably did, as did perhaps even gmail or google docs, but how the hell did the IPO deliver any real impact to the internet?

Oh, also, Bittorrent was a 2001 invention, how is that not getting a mention over any of those last three? According to a quick wiki it accounts for 25-55% of all internet traffic. Large range yes, but even at 25 that's kinda a big deal. Hell, even fios was a bigger deal then this. Plus, yeah, I'd even like to throw steam in before things on that list. Instant download access to games? Kind of a big deal.

Seriously, terrible list.
