Sony Hypes New Online Service, Links Gadgets to DLC

Sony plans on launching a new online service next year that aims to connect their vast media empire with their vast consumer electronics empire. This is part of their turnaround strategy to stop the $1 Billion loss each fiscal year and bring Sony back. Time will tell.

Quote:
"That's the kind of combination that I think is not seen anywhere else," Hirai said in an interview at Tokyo headquarters. "That I think is where our core competence lies, and that's a differentiator for Sony." The online service will include games, movie downloads and other interactive entertainment, which will be accessible on Sony products, such as Bravia TVs, Cyber-shot digital cameras and Reader electronic books.

Trying to "connect their vast media empire with their vast consumer electronics empire" is what put them in the position to lose $1 bil per year. They need to stop using each division to milk more money for the others and try to make what consumers want for a change.

You stop making sense right now sir! Just stop it right now! You know there's a company policy at Sony against logic!

If there's one company out there who can outdo Apple in terms of Style, Elegance, Design and Engineering it's Sony. They have resources to do it but it's too sad they cant find a cohesive strategy to put it all together

Sony's biggest problem is distraction and being stuck in 80s mentality. While there has been slight changes lately they still refuse to play the game with today's rules. They still have the whole "create a format every 5 year and re-release everything" business plan in mind and it just doen't work

And they really need to streamline their product line. Their product line is a complete mess with no unified vision. And they need to put more emphasis on software rather than just releasing a good piece of hardware and bundle it with mediocore software

I hope this new development means a new beginning and unified strategy for Sony. As much I dislike their arrogance, proprietary formats, lock in schemes and "we know everything" attitude, I still want to them to make a big comeback and spoil us with their gadgets. Come on Sony, it's time to make a come back!

I hope they fail miserably and go bankrupt. I've been boycotting Sony ever since that rootkit fiasco (among other things). Inexcusable.

"Hirai said Sony already offers streaming video, comic delivery and a news service, but could expand into any of the gamut of services available for personal computers, such as fitness and financial services."

You will get fat.
You will be broke.
