FCC Lists 7 Biggest Barriers to Broadband Adoption
Ars Technica tells us about a recent document from the FCC that outlines the seven biggest barriers to widespread broadband adoption. Though no solutions are presented by the FCC, this list probably confirms some of the concerns that you may have, if you’ve given this subject any thought.

I've got a different set of 7 reasons:
1) Comcast 2) Qwest 3) Time Warner 4) Charter 5) AT&T 6) Sprint 7) Verizon

One of the major issues is rural broadband.
I had to pay out the ass to get Charter Communications to run a cable line to my new house. I know many people in my area that want cable but can't afford the upfront installation costs.

Aren't Charter and Comcast the same thing?

So how what is the price and cost to bury a fiber line from low to high?

At least it's not 33.6 Kbps Netzero dialup though. That's what I kept telling myself... lol.

hmmm
The electric companies aren't much better. My sister has a moutian cabin in VT and the power lines run down the road. To get it the 600 feet from the road to the cabin, they want $15,000. Needless to say they are off grid and using solar.

#3 is a valid one in rural areas. In my area we have had a few piss ant wireless companies selling "high speed" 512 /128 connections for years. Now that AT&T and Comcast are finally starting to offer decent internet connections people don't know what to do.
The big companies couldn't have been bothered with rural Michigan for the last decade and now they can't get customers back from the shitty little wireless companies that have made a name for themselves.

The only economical way I can think of to get BB into really rural area's is a series of Wireless Repeaters, or the power lines.
If you live in a shack, with no power or water and a shithouse in the back yard, well, yer on your own Try soup cans and a really, really long string ![]()
