Stuff for HTPC

That should keep the interested newb occupied for a while :)

Nice collection of info

Great links, and great to see the forums back up again.

Tiger Dave's site was invaluable to me for setting up HDTV timings, tons of information for gamers and widescreen resolutions as well.

Great post. Thanks CrimandEvil!

Unfortunately, all the HT group posts got "poofed" in the upgrade but this is a good start.

This forum BTW guys is not just for HTPCs but for HTs as well.

Thanks. I found that most people have the greatest amount of trouble when trying to build a HTPC but I did plan on posting links for the other stuff too. It's great to know that the info could be of help to some you guys.

nice job. i even learned some neat stuff from your post, this deserves to be a sticky

I have to remember to update this this weekend, I have alot of links to post.

Very helpful, I've been looking for a compilation like this. Lots of good info :)

Sticky?

Okay I just did another small round of updates, some more stuff for HDTVs and added some new sections. More to come.

nice, I just got my PVR250 this last weekend.. now to just find time to finish everything anfd get it all up and running..

I'll go look in the stuff you posted now, but what's a good wireless KB/mouse/pointing device combo?

Logitech's MX is a nice setup, Gyration also has a good one too.
http://htpcnews.com/main.php?id=gyration_gt_1

If I had the cash I'd probably go with the Gyration. Logitech's bluetooth MX900 is pretty good too, I'm looking to get an Apple bluetooth board to test though. :D (IMO it's a nice looking KB that I could mod alittle).

I've noticed issues with distance on the MX series though, I imagine the bluetooth is better.

I looked at the gyration but it seemed the site was down amd all but out of business. Maybe it was a fluke.

I saw a review on another KB that has a pointer stick on the upper left corner in the UK, but couldn't find that KB here at all. :(

guess Im still looking

etid:

really liking this one: http://www.interlinkelectronics.com/products/retail/rfkeyboard.htm

yea, not liking the gyro stuff after using it at compusa

I ordered one of those cheapie liteon keyboards over on the egg for 18 bucks. Should be here on the 9th. Let ya know then

Quick update!

Okay I filed in all the USB-UIRT/ LIRC links that I've been able to find, enjoy.
I also added a link to an interesting piece of software for burning CD's/ DVD's over a network, the guys at HTPC news found it and I thought some here would like/need it too.

If theres anything you'd like to see here go ahead and ask, I'm sure I have a link or two for it somewhere in my bookmarks. :)

Or if you have any general HTPC questions go ahead and ask them.

/general htpc q:

what's wrong with the ati all-in-wonder cards? i always thought they'd be good.

then again, i am something of a n00b and only toying with the idea of building an htpc.

never mind, figured it out... here's the answer, in case anyone else has that q:

it appears that you need a card for storing images like a TiVo does in addition to the card that displays on the tv. stupid me, being a n00b, i thought that the two were one and the same, but they are not... and the all-in-wonders do *not* do encoding/storage, just decoding/playback.

starhawk close but not quite, the mistake you made is AIW cards only do encoding in software not hardware. All the recommended cards like the PVR-250 and such do realtime hardware encoding.

This thread made front page today @ [H]ard ocp :)

I'm about 3 months too late in answering this but here goes nothing :D

http://www.lumenlab.com/forums/index.php?act=idx
http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?forumid=12
http://www.diyprojectorcompany.com/phpBB2/index.php
http://www.diybuildergroup.com/index.php

Most of the above sites have stores where you can pick up essentials.
I personally recommend Lumenlab for their: quality results, short learning curve, great forums, cheap prices.
Otherwise there's good info to be found at the other places as well, especially DiyAudio.

" A really easy way to make high quality Audio/Video cables "

http://www.bus.ucf.edu/cwhite/theater/DIYCable.htm

Stumbled upon that one at the Lumenlab forums, lots of different electronics merchants listed, many of whom i've never seen before. BlueJeansCable supposedly uses Canare parts....the same parts linked in the guide above.

Yeah most of the "homegrown" cable makers now either use canare or belden for thier cables. I make mine from Liberty SDI wire and thier compression fittings but thats because I get them from work. Canare is very high quality stuff and used extensively in the broadcast industry.
