so i have done a bit of testing on several lappys i have sitting here

if you have a pentium M
1.5+
with 512mb or above

using a mobility
radeon 9000 64mb
640x480 low or medium
(medium lags a tiny bit if your being activly hit)

radeon 9200 64/128mb
640x480 low or medium
if you OC a tiny bit (10%) you can use medium very well

radeon 9600 64mb
your looking at 640x480/High
or 800x600/low
800x600 at medium falls below 25fps far to often to be playable

radeon 9600 128
same

radeon 9600 128pro/pro turbo
800x600medium with never droping below 28fps

radeon 9700 64/128 (stock speed)
800x600 medium running at 40-45fps
1024x768 low.... but 800x600 is better

radeon 9700 64mb @ 475core, 450mem(225ddr)
1024x768 medium with never droping below 32fps

going from a P-M 1.5 to a 1.8 did not change the average fps any noticable amount

systems used a 80gb 5400rpm mobile drive
mem was pc2700 2.5-3-3-7

been playing on the oc'd 9700 for the past 6 hours and man....
i have never in my life fallen into a game like this before
when the dam imp jumps out from the wall i'm jumping in my seat as i click away at it with the shotgun
good luck to all
its one hard game

Just A Note

Playing Doom III Currently @ 800x600 High ON-
Dell Inspiron | 9100
3.0Ghz P4 w/HyperThreading
512mb DDr400
Radeon 9700 Mobility 64mb

Runs great for me , only lags when there is like more than 3 people on the screen .. avg bout 30-40fps ! ...
also plays in 1024x768 Medium Fine & 1280x1024 Low Perfect :)

Too bad you didnt have a 7200rpm HD to test it on.....could this noticeably improve performance in the same system?

That's probably a good guess.

I'm paranoid about overclocking my laptop's video card (Geforce 4 440Go)...I'm afraid the laptop won't be able to dissipate enough heat and die.

It could possibly, but I wouldn't expect anything over 5% in FPS. Load times should see a nice boost.

If I had Doom3 I would try on mine and let you know, sadly I don't.

I'm having a lot of problems running. My specs are as follows:
1.6ghz banias
512mb pc2700
60gig 5400 rpm hdd
radeon 9700 mobility 128mb
winxp pro

I'm running the newest omega drivers, and I can't play on 640x480 with all details on low and shadows off. Any suggestions? BTW, I just got the laptop last week, its a fresh xp install, no bloat eating up ram.

Yeah, I've got the 2373GVU (same GPU, CPU, HD, RAM) and I'm debating whether to buy this game. I really really wish they would hurry up with that demo.

Boner: If it's a fresh winXP install, have you installed the latest versions of DirectX and any hardware or video card drivers?

Using Doom 3 and a FireGL 9000 64 Megs, runs Medium Detail and 640x480 very solid, even when getting hit a lot it doesn't slow down.

Yeah I'm using 9.0b, and I used the included aopen1557 drivers. Chipset and all are installed. I'm using the omega 4.7 video drivers.

for those wondering
the xp install on the machines is about a month old
(i backup and reformat once every 6 months and do all my machines at once)
the machines were setup as most all of us are actualy going to run doom3
bittorrent was running (bout 15k x 25k) in the backround, AIM was minimized, fraps was running. no AV is installed or running, couple of IE windows were minimized
SP2 RC2 was installed on all machines
all windows updates were preformed
adaware was run before testing comenced on each machine
i dont know how much of a diff SP2 would make over a SP1 system
i think i need to visit a client today with a same make and model as one of the system's i tested and i know they are running SP1 and wouldn't mind seeing doom3 so i will report back on any differences
using a 4x panasonic +-DVD writer in the media bay
or a 24x cdrw/dvd combo (depending upon machine)

the hard drive is not being used at all during game play
so a 7200rpm would porbobly speed up level loading some
but as it is its pretty quick i would upgrade other things first
i tried each system with 3 mem configurations
2x256
1x512
2x512
going to 1024mb gave a tiny improvement over 512 bout 1-2fps

using speedswitch on the oc'd 9700 machine
i underclocked the processor down by adjusting the multiplier
(fsb stayed at 400mhz) on the dothan (2mb) P-M running
at 1024x768@medium the FPS did not decrease until i had hit 1.1 ghz
showing the real botelneck of the system to be the GPU

i wish i could get my hands on the new mobility 9800
with a P-M 1.5+ i should expect 1280x1024@high to be a real possibility

no, only load times would be affected...

and while the game is good, so far it really dosen't seem all that hard... im playing on the level between super easy and veteran....(marine, is it? can't remember)

scary though... I dunno if I can bear to play too much tonight haha

Well how about my 2.8 Celeron with Radeon Mobility 9000 IGP (64 mb) and 512 RAM...you think it will run?

a 9000IGP is on the exact same level as a mx440
so your looking at 640x480low/medium
since you do have 512mb....
i would say it should probobly do medium at 640x480
sadly its not something you can O'c at all

so overal
it will play
and it will be fun
but the graphics wont be great

This thread deserves a shoutout on the front page!

I have a 1.3PM
384 megs of ram (2100ddr)
r9000 64 megs of ram
5400 rpm drive

If I had 512-768, then I could play at low/meduim 640x480?

I've been playing the game on my inspiron 8600 with a 1.7 p4-m and an ati 9600pro 128 mb. I have 768mb of ram. The game runs great, I'm running at 800X600 @ high detail. It's working very well, looks beautiful. Damn that game is scary :D

how bout an intel extreme 2? :p

With a water block and some mad overclocking imagination, you might be able to pull off at least a couple of more FPS

800x600 low sounds about right for my system (Pentium-M 1.4 / Mobility Radeon 9600 64MB). Medium does get too choppy to be playable in most cases.

I have the older AOpen 1557 (the one with the Radeon 9600 graphics instead of 9700), and DOOM 3 works fine on my machine.

Here's my Doom3 benchmarks for the laptop in sig. I lowered the core speed from the usual (overclocked) 235MHz to 220MHz, but I'll slowly inch it back up if it still works with Doom3.

GF4 4200 Go 64MB @ 220/470, 61.45, restarted between each res/quality test
640x480 LQ: 32.4fps (ouch)
640x480 MQ: 32.4fps
640x480 HQ: 22.1fps
800x600 LQ: 32.4fps
800x600 MQ: 27.5fps
800x600 HQ: 14.8fps
1024x768 LQ: 20.1fps
1024x768 MQ: r u serios?
1024x768 HQ: u canot b serios!

I guess a P4-M 2.4GHz is just too slow (single channel PC2100/400MHz FSB :(). It's seems pretty playable at 800x600 MQ from the real game playing I've done so far. I'll try 61.77/62.xx later if I have time.

PCX, I have the same computer as you: i8500, 2.4G, 512Mb, GeForce4 4200 Go.
How do you even load Doom 3?
I have updated my drivers (even the modded ones I used didn't work)
I have overclocked my card to the specs you have.
I start D3 and the id intro is choppy and the main menu is unusable.
PLEASE TELL ME YOUR SECRET SO I CAN PLAY MY GOD DAMN GAME!!!

get some fps data for us all.

alt +ctrl + ¬ = when the console comes up type com_showfps 1 and com showfps 0 to take it off.

i can run 800x600 at a constant 30, hits 60 now and again on 800x600 on medium detail on my 2.4 ghz 512ddr radeon 9000 which is perfectly playable.

I'm getting 0 fps. The intro "id" clip is all choppy and the main menu won't budge

How can I even change the resolution? I can't access the options of the main menu

The game loads with no problem. I get 60fps during the intro video.

It sounds like OpenGL is trashed on your system. Use driver cleaner and reinstall the drivers. I've tried 45.32, 61.43, 61.77 and 62.20. All run about the same, but 61.43 runs slightly better for me.

I'm not sure how well it runs with the Dell provided drivers, but you can use the current drivers directly from nvidia (61.77). When you run the 61.77 drivers after you download it, cancel it after it extracts but before it installs. The setup won't update the driver. You have to update the drivers from device manager/display adapters/<video card name>/update driver...

Then select "install from a list or specified location", next,
"don't search, i will...", next,
click "have disk", browse, and select the drivers from c:\nvidia\61.77\nv4_disp.inf,
click ok, uncheck show compatible hardware,
select NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X, click next
and ignore the warnings.

Bleh. I have a m9 w/64MB and a 1.4GHz P-M. Gonna install D3 and check it out... I'm guessing 640x480 low.... will post timedemo scores after!
