So some of you may have seen the deal on the 2 1.6Ghz low voltage Xeons in the Hot Deals section here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=795636

Well I grabbed a set and was thinking I needed another case for the rack here at home. Well thanks to a PM from another [H] member, I got a coupld of the exact same cases over on 2cpu.

Anyway. Here's the deal. I wanted to water cool these. Nothing crazy, but still. I happen to have this Koolance PC2-601BW that got hammered by UPS in shipping left over after they paid for a new one. The case is shot, but the cooling is fine.

So I decided that I may as well mod the koolance parts into a rack chassis. Here's the first part:

First things first.

Pull the control board and remove the LEDs and display and replace with Blue and White.

Now I wanted to have the LEDs stand up a little less and I wanted to bring the display up a bit higher to come close to the same height as the LEDs. So I cut those little plastic standoffs the include in half.

You can see here the White LED is a bit shorter then the green

Adding the display

Make sure it all lights up :)

Here I get to the front bezel. Pulled the lock and the optic for the stock green power LED. That sucker is toast. The darker trim on the bezel pops off.

Some rough holes to start with and a dry fit

Houston, we have a problem. That pesky thing is in the way there in the middle. Not sure what it is. It looks like a Mylar cap, but I've never seen one that had 3 legs. Anyway, I decided to remount this on the back of the board and while I was at it I did the same to the two little electrolitics by the cable.

Time to cut the main bezel now and install

More later in a couple of days, maybe

that looks pretty sweet. really clean. i am not sure how good teh koolance system is going to performe but cool

Seems that everyone that hasn't had a Koolance beats them up. Those of us that do use them, love them. They do not claim the best in the business. But I would say they are the best in the business for ease of use/install and they do a great job cooling too :p

i just feel that why spend more money on a system like a koolance when you can spend less money on a system you make that can out performe a kit anyday.

Because it was free :)

And lets not turn this into a debate, m'kay? This is a thread about a mod.

the first 4 were from Ebay from a seller named mrpig2 and the other 2 from a guy selling them on 2cpu furums

That orange thing is a resonator, sorta like a quartz crystal, but it includes two filtering capacitors. Nice job changing those leds.

i hate you so much.... i tried so hard to get one of those damn sgi cases but every time i bid on one i got outbid like 2 seconds before it ended :(

nice mod, very jealous :D

i had one.. i got it from a guy on here..

ended up sellin it to my buddy cuz it didn't like my vantec lcd hdd racks..

not a bad case thou..

Some updates. I'm pretty much done till the 2 cases I scored get here.

Installed the fans/radiator in the lid of one of my existing cases since they will be interchangable.

Flecom. I'm done with these cases now. I can only hold 6 in my rack :p So I won't interfere with your bidding :) for now.

I have a suggestion, but do not know if you are already doing this. Since this is in a rack case I would sacrifice one case to be the watercooler. Put the res/pump(s) and radiator in this case and use the PCI slots as routing for the hoses. This way all the hardware is in one spot, easy access, etc.

When you say the hardware will be easily accessed, are you referring to the water hardware or the PC hardware?

Either way, I think once it is all done, you will see that everything is very easy to get at. These cases are quite roomy. And sacrifice a case?@!?!? SACRILIGE!!!
