Hello, I'm trying to make a comparison with an Athlon 64 3400+ which runs at 2.4 GHz and has a Newcastle core. It can be seen here at newegg for $178 US:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103488

You can see how it performs here:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/index.html?modelx=33&model1=64&model2=18&chart=26

Just in case the previous link doesn't work, use this one:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/
and you can choose whichever benchmark you want to look at.

Anyway, it appears there are at least 3 Intel Pentium processors that perform about the same as the Athlon 64 3400+ Newcastle. They are the Pentium 4 660 (Prescott), Pentium 4 570 (Prescott) and Pentium 4 EE 3.46 GHz. I tried finding these on newegg and it's like the impossible dream. All Intels look the same to me and I can't tell which is which. Could anybody tell me the price of these?

those benchmarks are game performance. amd thoroughly wallops intel in games so even it's lower end processors compete with some of the high-end intels. the cheapest processor you listed there is the 570, which costs like ~630 dollars. the 660 is like $660 and the EE is ridiculously expensive.

if you are only looking at gaming performance there is little reason to go intel at this time.

edit: you can see that in other apps that are not games, intel does very well against AMD and the processors you've mentioned there compete with the $1000 AMD contenders

Yea. shoes from socal is right (aside from all the rediculous amd vs intel arguments you will hear). Go with AMD the Intels you listed are very $$$

Good gosh! I used my calculator to figure out what the difference would be in Canadian dollars. It's like $650 CDN man (after taxes)! Holy cow! you can get an entire system at futureshop for that price (including taxes).
Phew! OK, thanks for the information. I figured I might be better off being "objective" and looking at the various options I have. Ah, man...
