Well, I've been waiting for some free time and today I got it, and decided, now was the time to turn my dead 6800 Ultra into the world's coolest keychain (and only one like it that I'm aware of). I drove over to Broadside's house which is like 15 minutes from my place to take advantage of his tools. And yes, a haircut is on tomorrow's agenda.
First, a picture of our naked target:
First thing, we (myself and Broadside) decided to use the power of the God's to dismantle this beast...
After realising it was an nVidia and not an ATi, we found out that mere flames were no match for the power of the Ultra! So, we went to more "primitive" means....
The result of cut #1 and the torch:
Well, after cut #1, we found out that PCB's are really crappy...they don't hold well once cut. So, I switched up to this saw for cut #2:
Once I got almost the entire way thru....it started freakin' out, due to the completel lack of material to cut thru, and lots of metal stuff attached to the back. So, I use my Man Power to rip the two pieces apart....note the memory module that pressed the eject button.
Still doing well for slow cuts, we used it for cut #3 as well...
Keeping a firm eye on my card and fingers.
Okay, the next step required two people, so we only have an "after" shot. Basically, we vice grip'd her in there, and broke out the first saw again, because we couldn't find a dremmel (our first choice) for the last cut, which was really wobbly. So, we found a better vice (yes, it is possible to break a vice somehow...but I diddn't do it, it was jacked before I even used it) and Broadside held down the core with clamps while I saw'd down the last cut. The result?
We also used the same method for carefully removing the AGP slot piece, but never took a picture. Oh well, you get the idea. Luckily we found it, as after it was cut off it went flyin' across the garage.
Now that we have our core by itself with some PCB around it, we needed a way to get rid of it without cutting anymore....so, bring on the sanding!
Okay, so what did we end up with? This is what we ended up with!
A dope keychain, and a little sweaty and suit-covered (from the torch, good lord that thing is dirty).
And finally, the corpse, which Eclipse recommends I send back for RMA.
Discuss.
