Can someone explain the difference between .wmv video format and .mpeg video format.
I did a google search but was unable to get what I was looking for.

WMV is propriety and only works natively with Windows. WMV has better compression than MPEG. Two things off the top of my head. There are other free/cross platform codecs that compress about the same or better.

WMV is microsoft-only.

MPEG is an open source format, MPEG 2 is old and in high use today. Mpeg-4 is brand new and whoops all other codecs as far as compression efficiency goes... but requires lots of processor time.

How would you know if you are dealing with a MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 file? Would the file extension be any different than .mpeg?

MPEG-4 files usually end in .avi. There's also a freeware program called "GSpot" that can tell you which decompressor to use to play a file.
