I have a Dell Optiplex GX260 and want to know if the following chip will work fine in it:

Intel P4 2.8GHZ/1M/533
SL7E2 COSTA RICA

This is the Tower version, not the SFF desktop type.

Please help me out. When I install it, will I need to clear the CMOS and reset the BIOS?

Run CPUZ and find out what chipset your motherboard has. It will also tell you the socket type. Basically, if the socket types match, and the chipset supports the new CPU, you're all set. You shouldn't have to reset the CMOS, but its a good measure to make sure the system see's the new chip properly.

Well, here is the CPUZ picture. Do I have the right hardware?

The socket on the motherboard is 478, the chip is 478, will it work right? Does the cache have anything to do with not letting it work?

Don't worry about the cache. As long as the socket types match, you're good. Though, you're current chip is a Northwood, and the one you're putting in is a Prescott. Prescotts run hotter than Northwoods, so be sure to clean off any old thermal compound from the hsf and re-apply it.

A prescott will run in on the MB just fine correct? Will I need to reset the CMOS or anything?

Yes, it should run fine. What chipset is the board? Like I said, its good measure to reset the CMOS, but you shouldn't have to.

Well, the reason I am asking all of this is because a buddy of mine tried this in his Optiplex GX260 and it did not bootup. I know the chip works fine, but I was wondering if it was because of the chip specs itself.

The 845GV supports Prescotts, but not the 845G, sorry. The best chip you can get is a 3.4Ghz Northwood s478.

P4 3.06Ghz 533Mhz (133Mhz x4) FSB socket 478, DDR-266 PC2100 (133Mhz x2)

Sorry about that. I forgot your board was 533Mhz only.

I don't think the 260 has the bios options to support hyperthreading, i've done a lot of mb replacements on them due to caps and in going through the bios I don't remember a hyperthreading option, I know the 270 has it, but I don't think the 260 does. Also, if I remember correctly, 845G doesn't support hyperthreading at all...

You probably won't want to get the 3.06 chip because it's going to be pretty expensive (realative to other 533 fsb 478 chips) as it's the only hyperthreaded 533 fsb chip and you won't be able to use the hyperthreading.
