I've looked around further on this and think I've found an answer to my own question :)
Reading the E5435 datasheet from Intel's website (http://www.intel.com/design/xeon/datashts/315569.htm), I found the following:
Hi,
I'm wondering if somebody here can answer a question that hopefully isn't too newbish! :)
I'm looking to buy a couple of Xeon E5435 CPUs for my Dell PowerEdge 1950.
Dabs is selling them here:

It's the active cooling...
All's well that ends well - machine running as normal again, all components in. Very odd though, dunno what caused it in the first place.
Might well have been the loose motherboard. Have used larger screws so it's well anchored to the case now. Touch wood it won't happen again.
Thanks...
Thanks plasma but don't think that's the issue.
The core components are back in the case (bigger screws for mobo :-)) and i reconnected the power button and it's turning on and off just fine now. So that's v good news. I'm going to start adding one component at a time until hopefully...
enginurd you're my hero. Did as you advised and it powered on and posted.
Mobo, psu, video card and cpu are in working order so the issue is elsewhere.
It may well be something as simple as a broken power button on the case!
So next step - get it powering on inside the case?
Thanks...
Hi,
Hoping somebody can help me, I'm fairly desperate at this stage.
I have the rig as seen in my signature. It was turned on without any problems last night. Turned it off in the normal way, then this afternoon when I pressed the power button nothing happened. Literally nothing, as if...
I'll second that. Dell support is absolutely woeful. The number of hours I have wasted on the phone to them is not funny.
Dealing with Apple support has always been prompt and efficient (and not outsourced to India either!).
I'll be buying a MacBook Pro in the next couple of weeks, once...
Quick question - just wondering if it's possible to use DDR400 RAM in a motherboard that only supports DDR333?
The reason I ask is because I have a gig of OCZ memory and would like to use it in a new small form factor system. The motherboard in the barebones system I'm looking at only...
Just another note about my CPU - it's revision D, not E.
Could that be the reason for my problems? I read elsewhere Revision E chips go a long way to solving some of the memory issues.
Thanks for the replies. I'll probably end up waiting till the video card arrives before doing anything, don't want to go spending anymore money unless I have to - this upgrade is costing me enough.
sm8000, I presume the PCI card won't even fit in a PCI-E slot - direct form factor?
An odd question but I'm wondering if it's possible to use an old PCI video card (voodoo 2) on a PCI-E motherboard?
I ask because I'm upgrading my rig from AGP to PCI-E but won't be getting the video card until a few days after my new mobo arrives. I'm going to be reinstalling the OS so if I...
