It's all context.
For me, coming from the P4/7800GS, moving to the i7/280 setup was a no-brainer (yeah the Yorkfield wasn't compelling, unfortunately).
The question coming from someone with a Kentfield or Yorkfield with a 260 or above, the answer seems pretty obvious -- if you've got...
Also,
You could wait -- you can always wait.. that's why you and I both are/were probably sitting on systems that are 5+ years old.
I really don't see a reason to hold-out if it's just for Phenom II specifications. If you were thinking of going C2D/C2Q and you really wanted to go AMD...
I'm in a similar situation as you are. Here's what I went with, and some more detail below:
Mobo: Asus P6T Deluxe
CPU: Intel Core i7 920
HSF: Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme 775 RT (w/120mm TR fan + TR LGA 1366 Bolt-Thru Kit, lapped)
RAM: Corsair Dominator 3 x 2GB (6GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3...
That's cool (no pun intended). Normally, I still go with the best available aftermarket HSF even though I've rarely been an overclocker.
I think going that route has contributed to the 5+ years of longevity I'm getting out of my system builds.
I'm going from a P4 2.4c/2GB RAM/7800GS to the i7 920/6GB RAM/GTX 280.
Just did the wifey up from an Athlon XP 2500+/2GB RAM/7800 GS to an E6750/4GB RAM/8800GT.
5 years ago I built those boxes to last, and last they did. Now they're going to be *nix boxes for other purposes...
Not sure what this oxidation and tarnish talk is all about, but I've been running both of the following for 5 years+ with no hiccup:
Thermalright SLK-947-U
Thermalright SP-94
All copper on a ABIT NF7-S V2 and ABIT IC7-MAX3 respectfully
I'm currently looking at the Vigor Monsoon III or the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme to cool my i7 920.
I'd be interested in the VM III feedback as well.
INFRNL is spot on. I'm coming from building our last machines in November of 2003 ( Athlon XP 2500+-based box and a P4 2.4c-based box -- AGP for life!).
While those machines are still running strong, for 5 years, I've researched several times throughout that time period on doing a rebuild...
* EDITED *
Budget is less than $2500.
Looking at going with the Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme 1366 BUNDLE for ~$71.99 .
Hopefully, this will give me a great air cooling option for the i7 920 that will allow me to run cool at stock speeds (and if I want to play around with OCing...
Also,
Can any SG01-F owners comment on the GTX 280 fit in terms of how it affects the hard drive cage? It's confusing piecing all of these disparate comments together from other places, but I got the impression that the GTX 280 would somehow conflict (dropping it down to supporting...
Squash that, after doing more research I came across a very handy Sugo case thread here on the forums that explains the differences between the SG01/SG02/SG01-E.
Thanks for the recommendations, much appreciated.
I had looked at the Scythe, but some people were disputing the support of the C2Q processors. I'm also not sure that something like the NT06-E supports the C2Q.
Also, after looking into the case more, is there a significant reason...
The Antec PSU I have listed above is a modular PSU AFAIK.
Any recommendations on a low-pro cooler that will fit in that particular case that works with the C2Q?
Thanks again.
