I'm a Security Engineer by trade, so to me SELinux is a must have on any server, but yes that's why I said Ubuntu is better for linux noobs. I use ubuntu on one of my laptops for personal use. Great distro, just not what I would personally choose for a server.
With as bad as the 100's have been on my 7900GS, I think I'll wait for the ones Nvidia releases to the public for now...they are buggy enough. I can only imagine the bugs in unreleased drivers!
Might fiddle with these if I have time later, but I doubt it.
I too reverted to 97.46's. Both of the 100.xx's so far have exhibited all kinds of weirdness. Aquamark scores are 20,000 higher than under the 97's but with severe jerkiness and some artifacting. 3DMark06 generally crashes to the desktop, 05's scores dropped. Can't overclock (as has been...
Quite a few engineers that I know would jump at the opportunity. They are already using SLI Quadro's for CAD and molecular modeling/3D design work. We are in pilot phase still, but they are absolutely loving the results. I know a lot of them who would gladly buy 4 Quadro's, let alone gaming...
Nobody can answer that question until AMR devices ship. The odds are that the hit will be slight. SLI can work without the dedicated connector with a slight loss of performance, so I don't think that it will heavily effect AMR, especially with the amount of texture memory they're putting on...
This has been rumored for awhile. I can only imagine the speed. I'm quite impressed with dual 6600GT's, I can only imagine what 4 6800 class GPU's would do
PCI can theoretically do a maximum (assuming 32 bit PCI) of 133 Megabytes/Second, or 1064 megabits per second; just over 1 gigabit. In real world terms you won't get quite that much. Basically, if the only thing you're running on the PCI bus is a gigabit NIC, you're pretty much using it fully...
Bah! Get your priorities straight!
"Why aren't we eating today Daddy?"
"Don't worry sweetie...look at my 3DMark score!!!"
j/k...my priorities are the same :)
I agree on the GPU selection, but the MSI cards do not have temperature sensors. If you aren't going to overclock that's not really a problem, but for me it would be.
Agreed. Basically, there is no reason to turn off paging. If you have that much RAM that you think you don't need a pagefile, then eliminating paging won't buy any performance.
As an owner of both ATI and Nvidia cards, I can tell you that the Cat's are still buggy. Some people applaud ATI's frequent release level drivers, but I've yet to find a really solid set. Nvidia stays in 'beta' a lot longer, but overall I think they still make slightly better drivers than ATI.
I didn't say it would make the system unstable :) Microsoft highly recommends you do not turn paging off. I have seen a few problems relating to it in my time, but not many.
A good compromise is to disable paging of the kernel. That way the OS itself never gets swapped out to disk.
That is bad advice. Many older versions of AIM have known security holes and doing as you suggest is just begging to have some script kiddie use said exploits on your machine.
If you really want to use AIM ad-free, there are other safer ways to do so. Google is your friend...
It is highly, highly, strongly, strongly recommended that you do not disable paging, even if you have many gigs of RAM.
If you must, you do the following:
1. Use Control Panel to open the System applet.
2. Select the Advanced tab.
3. Press the Settings button in the Performance...
It's definitely an upgrade. Only you can really say if it's worth it. Given what you've told me, I might go for it. Then again I don't sell old machines and parts usually. I keep them or donate them.
I'm not sure it's worth upgrading given the specs in your sig. Yes, it's a screaming fast system, especially for gaming. It's a faster system than what you have, but unless you either are getting really, really good deal or you have lots of money to burn, I don't think it's enough of a jump...
Yes, ultimately that can and will cause a failure.
This article talks about it some and has some pics too. A quick google will turn up more.
Maybe it's time for an upgrade anyways, now you have a good excuse ;) As you say you're running fine, you could stay that way for a long time or it...
