That's actually not exactly true. It seems to be different based on motherboard, in my experience. I have BAMT running on several different motherboards, and one annoying one will only boot if there's a monitor attached.
So, I finally broke down and got an HP Dv8t. The screen is only 1920x1080, but I guess I'll live. The main reason for buying it is the $500 off coupon that made it $1000 (coupon ends today).
So, what I got was:
1920x1080 18.4" screen
1.66GHz Core i7
4 GB RAM (upgradeable to 8)
320GB...
I'm typing on a 1920x1200 17" screen right now. It's perfect. I'm not worried about being able to run every game at 1920x1200 with max settings... I'm not really that much of a gamer anymore... but I do a lot of programming, and the extra screen real estate is essential... small text is not a...
What's with laptop manufacturers putting in smaller and smaller screens these days? 1440 x 900 on a 17" screen? What, am I that blind? I'm not paying for a 17" laptop just to have the font look bigger :/
I've looked around. but there just aren't very many people out there making Core I7s...
QFT.
You signed a 2 year agreement with AT&T. If you want a new phone before that, you don't get their subsidy. It's the exact same as every other phone and every other telecom. Why is this a surprise to anyone?
The SSD companies (and retail outlets) need to start listing the random read and write speeds. That's what really matters.
And for those asking what 256gigs is for... it's for your OS drive. You don't need a terabyte drive for your OS and applications... no one has that much space just for...
Thanks for all the tips. Right now I'm working off a 3 year old laptop (Inspiron 9300), which I know is not something to compare *anything* against... but even my Core 2 Duo at work thrashes the hard drive with 4 gigs of RAM installed (granted, it's running Vista 32 bit, so only gets to use...
To those wondering why I would need a big SSD... it's mostly for image post processing. I need to be able to take 300-500 12 meg RAW files at a time and convert them into JPEGs. I figure with a core i7 and lots of RAM, the hard drive is going to be a lot more of a bottleneck than processing...
CPUs get faster and faster. Memory gets cheaper and cheaper. Hard drives... well, they still suck.
99% of the time when something is slowing down my machine at work or at home, it's because something is thrashing the hard drive. I don't want that to be the limiting factor anymore.
SSDs...
Uh, so, at what point does it stop being a model? Could you not say the Discovery is the biggest model rocket in the world (yes, it's a shuttle not a rocket, gimme a break)
Others said it - it's not free money. They'd be getting shares for their money, more shares, same valuation of company, means each share's value goes down. So everyone who worked at the company who has shares would lose value in their shares.
The first rule of startups is - only take money...
How is this a fucking crime? She can go HAVE SEX with 100 other 14 year olds, and that's not a crime, but sending a half naked *picture* of herself to one and suddenly she's a sex offender?
Anyone should be able to do whatever they want with pictures of themselves. If they send a picture to...
Also, how much of the developer's profit does Microsoft take vs. Sony? 16 cents on a $10 game (which, if it's a gig, is a hell of a big game) is 1.6%. They probably each take somewhere between 30-70% of the cost of games sold on their services... making that 16 cents pretty damn insignificant.
I don't get it. my $9.99 1 gig DLC costs the makers 16 cents? Big f'n deal. Not exactly breaking the bank. The real problem is demos, since they're free and so often so big. But really, it's not stopping anyone from making paid content, it just explains why there's never any freakin' demos...
Yeah, Pachter is a dick. As others have said, gaming isn't as expensive as other entertainments you could be doing. They've even invented a new word during this recession - the stay-cation. Instead of spending $3000 going to the Florida Keys, you take a week off and spend the time relaxing...
I actually think that writing your passwords down is probably 100 times more secure these days than using one password for all your accounts. I mean, really, what are the chances someone's going to break into your house, open up the notebook on your desk, and steal your list of passwords...
Correlation does not imply causation. I hate articles like this... It's the old "fat people drink more diet soda, so diet soda must cause people to be fat" argument :/
Don't blame the user, blame the admins who didn't turn on password enforcement. Any decent system automatically does at least a dictionary check and requires numbers and symbols. My college had those requirements 15 years ago.
I think it's something that should be designed for. Netbooks are all the rage right now, and they pretty much universally have 1024x600, and are almost entirely used for browsing and emailing. I think you discount them too much. Couch computers they may be, but also computers for non-techie...
Used to happen to my compaq laptop. Came from dropping it one too many times. I'm guessing that was their problem, too. Hinges like that don't just spontaneously break. There are little pieces of metal in the hinge that provide friction. I would take it to a mom & pop laptop repair place...
Game downloads work because gamers are tech savvy and understand that if they start the download tonight, it'll be ready in the morning. Try telling that to your girlfriend when she wants to watch a movie "Sure baby, let's pick one out and we can watch it tomorrow". Right.
Plus, if you...
Uh... my Chrome 0.2.149.30 finishes the test in 1691ms.
If Chrome had an ad blocker, there'd be very little I need Firefox for. Firefox does seem to be friendlier to my 3 year old laptop at home, though.
Totally. They don't need a new law, they need to follow/enforce the laws we do have. Hello, 4th Ammendment - protection from unreasonable search and seizure.
Friggin' government refuses to follow its own rules.
it needs a bookmarks drop down that doesn't require the entire bookmarks tool bar to be displayed. It's a pain in the ass... I hate bookmarks toolbars, waste of space. One little menu button is so much more efficient.
I totally agree that an ad blocker is necessary.. I forgot how many ads...
Dude, seriously, how hard is it for the multi million (billion?) dollar space industry to install a friggin' antivirus on their laptops? Hell, AVG is free! Idiots. Seriously. The IT department should be chastised for this, there's just no excuse.
Wow, you guys are crazy. Yes, I agree, the street view guys should not be allowed to drive on private property. That being said, private roads are *not* the same as private property, as others have said. Many government-owned roads are marked private.
As for shooting the car, camera, or...

Ditto, man. We had a glass of milk and meat, starch, and a vegetable every dinner, only had desserts on holidays, and never had soda in the house. We went out to eat maybe once a month.
They're your children. They're totally reliant on you to feed them. If they're fat or unhealthy IT'S...
Most of the top 50 blu-rays on Amazon are $20 or less. Almost all are $25 or less.
Adjusted for inflation, a $20 DVD in 1997 is equivalent to $26 today.
If you pay $40, that's your own fault, no one's forcing you to pay crazy B&M prices. You can still buy $19 CDs at Strawberries, too.
Juno is total crap, video quality-wise. It wasn't shot with super expensive cameras, it was an indy film with cheap, indy equipment. It was good, but it was never intended to be an example of top quality film. It's like saying your Ford Focus has a terrible 1/4 mile time. Of course it does...
I saw it live a couple weeks ago at the local Lego meetup (http://nelug.org/). It's pretty awesome. For those that are interested, Brothers-Brick.com is a great blog for seeing what people in the Lego community are doing with those crazy little plastic bricks.
I believe the common requirements for a street legal car in the US are headlights, brake lights, turn signals, front and rear bumper, seat belts, and windshield wipers.
This thing looks like it lacks bumpers, which is probably the biggest sticking point. The rest can be tacked on.
Amen. I'm not an anti-government guy by any means, but this is ridiculous. There should not be a FEDERAL LAW against using your cellphone on airplanes. The government's job is not to enforce politeness.
Talking on your cellphone in flight doesn't cause anyone else any harm and is...
I miss [H] Console!
I think many reviews are lazy, but most of the time you can tell that pretty quickly. Most of the big name reviewers at least give a fairly thorough review, even if not all their reviews are thoroughly fair.
I think most of the time if you actually read the whole...
Guys - it's not a reduction on the 80 gig, it's just an increase in the HD size of the 40gig.... it just happens to be the same HD size as the 80 gig. I guess that's what we get for referring to them by the hard drive sizes, which is probably why they're calling it the Core system. They'll...
So, aside from the half dozen things that distinguish it, it doesn't have much to distinguish it? What?
With the PS3's latest firmware release, the online experiences are very close. The 360 has cross game voice chat and cross game invites, and that's about the extent of their "much much...
Everyone knows the accessories with "iPod" anywhere on the package cost more. You can get identical things right next to the "iPod" ones for far far less, even standard crap like headphone splitters.
