1) With a new enthusiast processor, I'd click on over to NewEgg and chose the rest of the gear I needed to build my first gaming computer in six years. I've had to keep in notebook computers for work and school, and getting all the funds together all at once to build a new system seems...
I think you are wrong. Most of the noise of the first-gen 360s was actually the DVD drive, not the fans. Your replacement probably has the BenQ drive (though the Elite apparently uses yet another drive) that was significantly quieter than the Samsung that MS started out with.
I haven't had the texture issue, but it often takes several seconds for the SOUNDS to load when I start a level or section of the game.
I'd also really like to be able to play the Story Mode on "Realistic" difficulty. Unfortunately, it seems that whenever I leave the game and come back by...
Ha!
I loved this series, and the movie was great and heartbreaking at the same time. If I didn't already have the series box... heck, I might go out and buy a couple just to give friends as presents.
Just picked up the Serenity widescreen edition from Buy.com for seventeen bucks. I'm sure...
x300 isn't going to give you great gaming performance...
You're kind of comparing a higher-end gaming card with a budget card. Almost an apples and oranges thing...
The 64MB RAM x700 won't be spectacular, but it should do the job. It has two knocks against it compared to the 128MB x700, I think: The obvious one is the reduced video memory, but I think it also has a 64-bit bus instead of the 128-bit bus that the larger card has.
Depends on how you...
Another one worth a look is the HP dv4000 / Compaq v4000T, with the x700 graphics.
Better portability with the 15.4" form factor for the HP product than the above Dell. If portability is important to you, the bulk of a 17"-er is too much for my needs...
It's not under 6 pounds, it's 6.34, but you can get some good gaming performance out of a Compaq v4000T with the x700 graphics.
Up it to 6.5 pounds and you can get the HP dv4000, which adds some pretty nifty quick-play features if you're going to be watching DVDs on the road or whatnot.
Sorry, wasn't very clear. (end of the week, right?)
I just didn't want to pay forty bucks and end up with an extra pair of earbuds if I could get just the remote.
NightFox, you've got PM!
I have the Matias iPod Armor for my iPod (I'm a clutz and I bump into stuff a lot, so sensitive electronics clipped to my belt better be bulletproof). I would love to be able to use the thing with an in-line remote AND my own headphones. I know Apple makes an in-line that has earbuds attached...
17" machines all tend toward the pricey side right now, as most have a gaming GPU in there. For a nice machine for your purposes without the 6800/7800GTX gaming GPU pushing the price up, check out HP's 8000 series. That's a pretty nice multimedia machine.
Edit: specifically, I'm thinking the...
Open it up and cut the metal casing off. Put a bright red dot near the edge of the top platter, set your stopwatch for 1 minute, plug the drive in, and start counting! ;)
Peel it off and use a little Goo-Gone on a paper towel to remove the residue. You can get Goo-Gone at the grocery store, Target, or WalMart for just a couple bucks.
I wasn't calling bullcrap on what processors WIdowPC offers. I was calling bullcrap on their explanation for this being "pre-order only" because they can't get those chips. I can get those chips right now to put in my desktop.
Sorry if that wasn't clear; I wasn't doubting the specs of the...
Nevermind. Reading the page you linked to answered my question.
So, no, WidowPC does not have them now. This smells like a line of bullcrap to me, too, since many online vendors have the chips in stock. I've seen the X2 4200+ locked up in the glass case at two stores in the last week.
Donate it to charity and take a tax deduction. That'll probably be more than you could get selling that ol' thang.
I'm really not sure where you're going to find a market for five or six year old laptops.
It doesn't have the life of a 12.1" with integrated graphics, but for laptops of comparable size the life is good.
The optional extended battery raises the back of the notebook, putting the keyboard at an angle (like an old typewriter; despite popular belief, this is NOT ergonomic at all and...
Look at HP's refresh of the dv4000. 15.4" widescreen with DVD quick-play controls and discrete graphics (x700) for your gaming needs.
You can get 3% back from online HP purchases with FatWallet.com, too. Always nice to see a little come back to you.
I'm sure there are others, but with...
Your text will be a bit (or more, depending on the display) blurry.
Go to a store, if you can, and play with one. There's no substitute for seeing it yourself to determine whether or not you can deal with changing the resolution on an LCD.
The Gateway and Dell owners I'm referring to use their notebooks very, very heavily. In the last year and a half, the Gateways and Latitudes I'm talking about have been beaten, and the technical problem rates for the Dells are probably twice as high as they would be under more normal levels of...
Trusting Gatway: The quality of their notebook computers has gone up a good bit in the last year, from what I've heard and seen. The folks that I know with Gateways are having fewer problems per user than the folks I know with Dell Latitudes, and the Latitude line is pretty reliable.
Really? Excellent. I've now hit my quota of learning something new today, and it isn't even noon yet. Not to thread-hijack (well, maybe), but how complicated a process is it to replace the LCD?
