I just installed Suse 10.1 on my server. Compared to 10.0, it's dog slow. The new package management system, quite frankly, sucks hard. It uses ~%35 of my memory to do anything. It's too bad too, because everything else about Suse 10.1 is awesome. Hopefully they start sending out patches...

Ifconfig is already included in pretty much any distribution. You don't have to download it, just log in as root and run it. The output of the 'lspci' command would be useful as well.

Depends on the specs really. I run a VIA SP8000 board as a router/traffic shaper/firewall and it's plenty fast for that (and handles me downloading multiple torrents with no problem whatsoever), but it's not suitable for anything requiring any real speed. I don't know if it would be fast...

May not be possible. Compaqs are "renowned" for having shoddy ACPI/APM implementations.

Runlevel 0 means the computer has been shut down. The reason it's not being turned off is either an ACPI or APM incompatibility. If you don't understand stuff like runlevels, you should probably pick up a Linux book and read it.

Very very wrong. Lines of code has nothing at all to do with efficiency. Algorithmic efficiency controls efficiency, not the number of lines in your code.

The Linksys LNE100TX should run off of the tulip driver (IIRC), which is included in Linux. No need to download anything. Just (as root) type 'insmod tulip'.

I did mark it active, using the disk management console, and it was able to boot, and read the boot.ini. However, Windows 2000 automatically assigns "C:" to the boot drive (idiocy), regardless of what the letter the drive was before. This fubared the install.

Try changing $IPTABLES -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o $EXTIF -j MASQUERADE to $IPTABLES -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE. That's what I use, and it works well.

I'm tempted to do the same. I need a functional, stable 3d accelerator under Linux, and although I like my ATI card, I think it's getting swapped out for something made by Nvidia.

I found out how to mark the partition as active, but that resulted in it being the 'C:' upon boot, so it couldn't find any of the OS files. I ended up just formatting the stupid thing. Crap like this is why I use Linux... :mad:

I did everything you specified except set D: as active, which it seems the Windows 2000 diskpart utility can't do. I'm pretty sure this is what I need to do to fix it though. Any ideas?
