sorry to start another thread but I'm posting this for my brother. He's gotten advice from other places but I told him to ask the pros on this HARDFORUM.com so he could perhaps take another look at his options and then decide...

His Specs:
AMD 3500+ 2.4ghz
2GB PC3200 Dual Channel
430 Antec PS Truepower v2.0

Games he likes to play:
CS:S
F.E.A.R
HALO
OBLIVION
SPORTS/RACING (NFS)

Dilemma:
He wants the best bang for the buck but also something to last him 1.5-2years...

His choices:

(1) - x850xt PE $150 After Rebate + Tax

(2) - xfx 7600gt $154.99 After Rebate + FREE Ghost Recon AW (no taxes)

(3) - eVGA 7900gt $270 w/tax AR

He knows the x850xt and the 7600gt will basically be the same. One will do better with certain games and vice versa. The 7600GT performs better in FEAR then the x850xt but the 7600gt has the edge in other games and also has sm 3.0
THe price difference isn't huge but he'll get a copy of GRAW which he can sell so the final cost of the 7600GT would be $110-120 - < That's an amazing price.

So would the 7600 GT be better then the x850xt at the $154 price or should be rather opt to get the x850xt PE for the same price?

IF THE ANWSER TO THE ABOVE QUESTION IS NO would the 7600GT be a better card for $120 then the x850xtPE for $150?

Also, not to confuse you guys but he saw a deal for the evga 7900GT for $270. Is the difference in price ($120) justfifiable for the performance increase or would the 7600gt/x850xt be enough for him?

I'm telling him to get the either the 7600GT witth the free game or the 7900 gt for $270 (possibily for $250AR). I told him to pick up the 7900GT for only $100 more. He doesn't know if the performance is worth the $100 premium so I need your help!
What do you guys have to say?
ATI x850xt PE $150
XFX 7600GT $150
eVGA 7900GT $250AR
Thanks in advance from my bro!

he's trying to find a coupon for the $250 AR price...I'm trying to find him one but it's pretty impossibe
The 270 price looks more reasonable...

He just bought the 7900GT. I told him about the hard-mod to get the gtx speeds so it should keep him happy for a couple of years before something newer/faster comes out. He got his for $250 after a $50 rebate at CircuitCity.com It's 329 - 10 - 50 rebate plus he had a gift card lying around. total is $250!

I've heard some crazy reviews on this card so hopefully he's happy. What do you guys think of it? It's an evga 500/1500. He's got a 430antec truepower v2.0 powersupply...is that good enough for this? it's 12a rating is 17 or 18. On everest he's getting a rating of 12.0 flat stable soemtimes goes to 12.08

$100 more then teh x850xt which he was going to get. He said he should have it by this week so I'll update you guys with what he does!
thanks for the info...

I see the x850xt pe for $199, its PCI-E.

I see any x850xt for AGP for $300.

Does this mean the AGP cards are generally this much more expensive than the PCI-E cards?

nice price no the gt im sure hell be overwhelmed with his purchase :)

Pretty much yeah. Highest end AGP had a very short window for upgraders when the X850XT was at microcenter for around $200.00 AR. Now the only deals for decent speed with AGP are the X800XL GeCube (which is now gone), and the X800GTO, and 6800NU's when you can find them, and some FSFT forums where guys will give people a break on pricing.
