I have been trying to purchase a used xbox360 wireless network adapter, but they are a lot more than I am willing to spend. When I was browsing through ebay, I saw TONS of listings for hooking your 360 up to a wireless network without the official adapter. Is this true???

yes ive seen people do it with wireless adaptors that connect to the ethernet port.. also read about people using 2 wireless routers, although that sounds alot more complicated to me lol.

i would recommend spending the extra on the official one to save the trouble and 'plug and play' as i know it can be quite a bitch setting it up by the other means. but if you're one of those people with alot of patience and time then great :D

you can use any normal wireless-ethernet bridge. I myself have my 360 and pc hooked up to a linksys wet54g using a regular switch, which works flawlessly, to the connected devices, it is just as if they are connected directly through a cable

Likewise.I picked up a Buffalo wireless bridge for $50 at best buy, works like a champ.

It's totally true, but it won't stop Microsoft from selling the official wireless adapters since many people probably don't know about this little workaround.

I'd do it, if my 360 weren't 1 foot away from my router.

You can save quite a bit with the Router option, but I think they may have lowered the price of the official wireless adapter. In Canada, it's gone from ~$120 to $100 and "only" $80 for sale these past 2 weeks. Guess it all depends if the ~$30 difference is worth a bit more clutter or not... So glad my PS3 comes with wi-fi onboard.

in all honesty, my linksys wet54g cost me 70 euros, with the normal shop price being 90, so the microsoft thing isnt that overpriced compared to other options (i wont settle for some shitty brand stuff). The pro for me was that my desktop PC runs linux, and well, ralink should get its shit together in the driver front, wireless with their stuff is an absolute nightmare if you dont run windows. So i bought the wireless bridge for my desktop, the when i moved the 360 to my room, i could hook it up for the low low price of one ethernet switch, the next device (probably a small htpc) can then be hooked up for the low low price of a cat5 cable (of which i still have bunches in my tech-drawer)

point is, if you have multiple static devices that require wireless, setting up a small wired segment with a bridge and a switch simply rocks

i just set mine up and it was stupidly easy.... all i did was run a cat5 cable from my 360 to my laptop and did this :-

"With your laptop connected wirelessly to your network access point, connect the wired network connection on your laptop to the wired connection port on the back of your Xbox 360 with any Ethernet cable.

Open the Network Connections list from Start > Connect To > Show All Connections

Right-click your Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties from the list.

On the Advanced tab, check the box to Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection. In the Home Networking Connection dropdown list choose Local Area Connection. Uncheck the box to Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection."

no boxes or adaptors needed :)

Yes, use a wireless ethernet bridge.

+1 for the modified Linksys WRT54G route. I love that router, it can do so many things.

For whatever reason, when using the same linksys router as you all, i couldn't connect to some games on the 360 via wireless while I could when it was physically plugged into the router. Perhaps if I had the real microsoft adapter...I dunno..
