WinXP SP3 on Mac w/Boot Camp?

Has anyone tried to install the new WinXP Service Pack 3 on your Mac with Boot Camp? I keep getting an error message that says SP3 needs an extra "4 megabytes" of hard drive space to proceed. I've un-installed over 25 megabytes but this error continues to occur. Does this mean SP3 just won't work with Boot Camp?

Didn't a new version of bootcamp just come out to fix this issue? 2.1 i think

I searched Apple's support and found nothing. Thanks for the tip. Nice reference to "The Exorcist," SubZero. ;-)

Hi, found this thread during a search.

I got a new MacBook Pro for Christmas, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8GHz 1066MHz frontside bus with 6MB L2 Cache, 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, 320GB Hard Drive and Leopard 10.5.6.

I want to install XP using Bootcamp. I ordered Windows XP Home 'SP3' for System Builders from Newegg (it hasn't arrived yet). However, now I'm reading on the net that I have to have XP 'SP2', only, not 'SP3'. Is that true?

It should work fine with SP3, SP2 requirement is the bare-minimum that you can use.

Thanks Kaos. I just wanted to make sure before I open the XP disc packaging and then be unable to return it if it doesn't work as I've been reading. Do you (or anyone else out there) know of someone that has actually installed XP SP3 (not the update) on their Mac?

Kaos,

Can I download the Bootcamp 2.1 update to Leopard before attempting the XP SP3 install? How? Thru Boot Camp Assistant?

Edit: Update Software says everything is updated but the Boot Camp Helper version is 2.0.

Edit 2: As you can all see, I'm a total noob to Apple so I'm really guessing at half this stuff. I see from reading the Windows install PDF on the Apple site that it's 'after' the XP install that you then insert the Leopard disc and install drivers from Boot Camp. Then you can install the Boot Camp 2.1 Updated drivers.

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup.pdf

My concern about all the XP SP3 OS not installing stuff was that it aws failing to install because the Boot Camp 2.1 Update had to be there before you installed XP SP3. Now I believe it does indeed have to be there if you 'already' have XP 'SP2' installed and you want to 'update' it to SP3, but not if your doing a fresh install of Windows using an XP disc thats 'already' updated to version SP3.

I guess we'll see once I get the XP disc in the mail.

For some reason when i try to install XP sp3 on bootcamp it wont restart. After the format and blue screen where everything is installed, the computer is supposed to reboot from the XP CD however it stays in the black screen and says: boot from CD... and never boots. Something i'm doing wrong here?

Mike,
Thanks for asking these questions, that way I don't seem like a noob when I get my macbook aluminum tomorrow or early next week :).

Tnt, I haven't done it yet but, did you follow the instal pdf I linked to?

You have to do this.

1/ Install bootcamp 2.0 on OSX's side.
2/ Use assistant with XP SP2
3/ Update bootcamp on windows side to 2.1
4/ Update to SP3

Only way to get it to work.

EDIT: looks like I already see someone posted the same stuff I did. =) Well just to rehash to the lazies who don't read the middle section of threads.

I think some of these 'XP SP3' threads get confusing in that there is a difference between just 'Updating' to SP3 from XP SP2 or actually installing Windows XP SP3. Both requiring similar but different procedures.

Already have XP SP2 installed? Download the Boot Camp 2.1 Update then install the SP3 Update.

No XP install? Install XP SP3 Full version (not Update) then install the Boot Camp 2.1 Update.

Either way it sounds like you must have an install of XP before you can use Boot Camp to install the necessary drivers and chipsets.

Correct?

ok so now the question is ... i lost my leopard DVD but i have it backed up onto an external... is it possible to boot from external HD rather than have a DVD in the drive?
