Does that void your warranty? Also judging from the pics, did you use a hot object to cut off the plastic?
 
I used a dremel. Warranty is gone :eek:

Lower temperatures do not make me cry :)

Edit: everything is messy since I jsut finished doing all this and wires came apart. I also replaced my tuniq tower with a true 120 black edition.
 
seems like a terrible air flow pattern, but when you throw brute force at something it will get cooler i guess.
 
The 80mm fans are super quiet and I have two 120mm intake fans you can't see in the picture. Also this is basically how asus tri fan is (except in my version the 80mm fan blows across blowing air out while the two top fans force the air out).

Nice once again, what were your temp diff from going from a tuniq 120 to a true?
 
I bet that a lot of hot air is gushing out the rear slot with this setup. This is probably better than the Asus tri fan card because the hot air is pushed out completely by 3 fans.
 
Thing is with asus their sides are open and the block is designed for pushing and going out sides. My core 1 ingame is running at around 64c but core 2 is where the problem is so far: it reaches 85c and higher after about 10 minutes of gameplay. I'm trying different configurations out right now though.

Looks like 120mm would be too large.

Did you disconnect the main GPU fan? There's probably some weird airflow issues going on there, with it spinning.

If you don't mind getting the hot air back into the case, I would suggest you to reverse the fan on the second core. I think that you will get a better air flow with this config and a better temp.
 
Isn't there a way to just remove the two copper blocks from the plastic housing instead
of having to cut holes? Hope that card doesn't become defective any time soon.
 
I really hope your card never dies. I'd never void my warranty like that. I'd rather the card die from heat over time and receive a replacement vs. voiding the warranty right away.

There is but that gets rid of 80mm fan. If the card dies it's not really a problem for me honestly.
 
The only way you are going to be able to get the cores to the same temp under load is to have the cooling completely separated. One cooling system for each core with a block off plate in between to keep the hot air from being shared.

It could be done fairly easily with a bit of cardboard.. say from a shoebox or two.

You would also need to cut two holes in the side of your case and duct the card to there with the fans pulling hot air off of the heatsinks and blowing it outside the case.

Fairly simple design and it would cool the card sooooo much better than stock or you ghetto mod.

There would be no reason to even have the original shroud or fan.
 
I know but if it's not a problem then you should just watercool your rig. I mean, temps
will be a lot better...in the 20s on idle, and in the 30s at load from what I've read on a
4870x2. Regardless that 4870x2 will probably never die any ways, and if you get better
temps than stock and you just wanted a quick easy solution and could give a rat's ass about the warranty, then why the hell not :cool:. Kudos.
 
I'm gonna watercool when the newer I7s come out because from what I read the current ones give off a hell lot more heat then last gen. Also waiting on foxconn bloodrage.
 
Dear god man. That poor card. You could've just gone onto Riva and turned the fans up a tad.

What holds the copper heatsinks down? Are the copper heatsinks and stock fan/plastic able to be made separate?

If there held down by their own screws, then you could take off the stock black piece with stock fan and mount a fan on each copper heatsink. (saves from cutting on the black plastic piece)
 
why not buy a real aftermarket cooler for it? At least you could of put the original cooler back on it if you needed to rma it

they aren't, if i remember correctly. i think just 2 copper blocks locked in place.
 
gutsy work. too bad about core 2 temps.....

could you shroud around core 2 to divert some of the hot air?

maybe a dumb idea more work and more getto plastic

and probably wouldent help much at all

Nice work. I'm thinking about doing some sort of heat mod on my 4870x2 as well. I was thinking about removing the whole plastic shroud and making a nice aluminum sheetmetal shroud with fan mounts.

To all the whiners... if you've never made a keychain out of a $400 CPU, or cut up a brand new case to fit a heater core, or made up a brand new mod with nothing but ingenuity and a good dremel disc, you're probably just another p*ssy follower. [H] is about pushing the limits and trying something new.
 
just an update. I used aluminum sheetmetal to create better airflow and remove spaces that let air out and the temps are great now
 
I'm sad with what you have done to your card, at least we could exchange the plastic shroud first before you cut it. Your shroud looks much better than my Sapphire shroud.
 
That's some innovative work you have done. It's less expensive than buying a third party cooler. It's your gear, you bought it and do with it what you choose. If your mod works, then kudos.

Good job man. I'm all for DIY'ers.

There are none without going on water which I'm waiting on till newer i7s come out. I wish asus would sell their tri fan heatsink without the card but alas.
