Just tried reinstalling BF2, and get the error "Can't install Battlefield 2, try again from the beginning." It keeps hanging while installing the Gulf of Oman map. I've tried restarting my computer but it still won't install.

Any ideas?

Right click the installer exe, go to the compatability tab.

I had to run it in compat mode to install...so this should work.

Could be a scratch on DVD....i had no problem installing BF2 on vista 64 but i did had major issues with punkbuster, even after update. Sometimes it just kicks me out of the game for no reason.

How do I do that?
Yeah, you can go to the DVD rom drive and right click and explore the disc. Find setup.exe and r-click, properties, then the compatibility tab, check 'run in compatibility mode' and select xp SP 2.

Also keep in mind that BF 2 and 2142 needs hotfixes to run on Vista.

Make sure you have SP 1 Also, I listed them a couple weeks ago in one of my post but I don't fee like doing it again. You can just search back in my post a week or two but have fun because there is a lot ;)

2142 works on my vista 64bit..

not so sure about BF2.....

but it should work at least, since its basically the same game engine..

Works fine for me on x64 too. I would trying obtaining another cd/iso and using that to install but still use your CD key.

A bit tangential but I wish they'd just release BF2 and its expansions/blister packs as one game on Steam.
Would seriously revive the community, and I'm in the same boat as the OP in that this talk of BF 1943 and BF BC 2 coming to PC has made me want to dive back into BF 2. It's just that I can't be bothered to dig out the DVD, install it on Vista x64, install the addons, patch it to the latest version, and then try to remember my username/password.

If its on a specific file it could just be a scratched CD/DVD, try copying the entire contents of the disc into a folder on your hdd, and run the setup from there. If you can't manually copy the files then the disc is knacker, try and get another copy from a friend or online (perfectly legal if you own the original)

BF2 installed and runs with no hitches on V64 for myself.

Sound like as others have mentioned, a bad disk.

Wiped the DVD with an Oakley microfiber bag and the game installed. Yay! Now I can't play because punkbuster kicks me...sigh...off to find the hotfixes for Vista 64

You need to go to the punkbuster website and do a manual update. I found this out the hardway. It took some digging around. It seems as though that punkbuster does not update automatically from within Vista. If you do the manual update, should solve your problems with playing and does away with the kicking because of the punkbuster error.
