Hey all. My old PSU (gamexstream) died on me. My rig is fairly old (C2D Q6600 / 7900gt) so I'm not worried about powering this so much as I am my next upgrade - which will be something along the lines of a mid-range i7 and a 295 perhaps. (Not upgrading for another 6 months probably) I've pretty much decided on Corsair - but I'm kinda stuck between two models.

Either I can go with the 620HX, which seems to be better quality and get great reviews - or I can go with the 850TX - which I have not heard much about. I'm a bit weary of 620 watts - so ideally id like to go with a bit more - but don't really feel like dropping down the money for the 1000hx. So hows the tx compared to the hx? And is the additional wattage needed?

Thanks

i believe the hx is the modular design and the tx and vx lines are just normal with attached cabling. other than that, they are either made by CWT or Seasonic, and while i prefer Seasonic, there is nothing wrong with CWT. the breakdown by manufacturers is as follows i believe, some please correct if i'm wrong

Seasonic

hx520/620/10000
vx450/550
tx650/850

CWT
tx550/750

It's true that the HX620 is a better quality PSU. However, the TX850 is still a perfectly good unit, so there's no reason to have any qualms about going with it. It'll handle your system fine.

Seasonic makes the CX400, VX450, HX520, HX620, and TX650. CWT makes the VX550, TX750, TX850, and HX1000.

Hrmm, seems like most people think I need to go up to beyond the 620. So, if I go up to the 850 watt range - what other PSUs are competitive with the tx? Also, I kind of would like a modular power supply (the hx is but the tx is not I believe). Are there any good PSUs in the 850w range that are also modular?

Thanks

At 600w also check out the BFG modular PSU.
For 850w look at Antec Signature, Enermax Revolution, and Silverstone.

Price wise though the Corsair HX1000 might be pretty close or less then the Antec Signature, Enermax Revolution, and some of the Silverstones.

The HX620 will be plenty powerful, even the HX520 would run that. You could put in a GTX 285 with the HX520 and your quad, and you still be fine. I can vouch for the HX520 though, I had one running an older set up with an E6750 and an 8800GTS (640mb) with a 2 HDD's, 2 dvd drives and 7 fans. Ran it with ease.

Edit: A good modular PSU in the 850w range is the Ultra X3 850. I had the X3 800 and that thing was a beast. There is an Ultra X3 650 or 600 too, which would also power your rig. You could also look in to the Silverstone DA700 or DA750.

I see you have pretty much decided on Corsair, nothing wrong with that at all, they make great PSUs. However there are other good companies. I just bought a PC Power and Cooling 750w for 100 (80 after rebate) and I love it. Its 30 bucks cheaper than the Corsair 750tx. HardOCP gave it a gold award compared to the silver for the Corsair. There have been some bad reviews on the egg but I recieved mine in great working order, and it has the new box with mentions its a division of OCZ now, so I think those issues have been resolved. I am by no means an expert on PSUs but I did do my homework before I bought it and couldn't be more pleased.
