same price more or less... not sure what to go with... Which one can OC better (air only)? graphics applications? and games?...

I haven't had Intel processor since the good old day of Pentium Pro.

955 would be cheaper and you can save some more on the mobo with 790X chipset.

they would overclock to around the same leve but the Intel is more efficient clock for clock

Gaming, I don't think you would notice a difference between them.

i5 usually has a higher percentage OC, and is faster clock for clock.

But as stated, gaming performance isn't going to change much.

What is the actual % difference, given average max OCs, in performance? Sorry to hijack, but I need to run simulations which are CPU intensive, so I'm wondering if it's worth going with the i5, or even i7,

beside gaming, i do graphics and looking to do some video too.. so which one has an edge? i5?

Doesn't efficiency go up for Phenoms as the clock speed goes up? I thought I read that in a review somewhere.

An i5 setup is going to run you about $80-200 more than an AMD setup, assuming you get an equivalent motherboard. It will be faster, but you will not notice it much at all in real-world scenarios.

Check out the combos:

Should I ask ye olde Micro Center question? Because there's no way any AMD processor will be a better value than a $149 i5.

if thats what you do then the i5 750 or i7 860 are your best choices.. especially if you get into more video editing along the lines of HD video..

for some reason, i can't seem to find decent benchmarks between the i5 750 and amd 955 outside of games... anyone got any links?

I could be wrong, but aren't most if not all p55 boards single gpu only? If thats so the amd would be better simply by getting a 790x mobo and getting to graphx cards

On AMD's side, I'd say theres no difference between the 955 and 965, unless you'll overclock...I have a 955 but I call it a 965, I changed the multiplier from the BIOS to 3.4GHz without giving a voltage boost, right there...You don't want to waste some cash on something you can do easily...But I'm sure that the 965 would overclock better, when talking about overclocking my 955, I did hit 4.0GHz @ 1.67v on air. Ran stable for 8 hours and maximum temp was 56c.

Yet I'm sure that Intel's chips are better overclocking, not to mention that some of their chips(if not all new ones) can go 75c+(?) while 965's maximum temp is 63 or something really close to that.

You can actually see here(Can't find the link where it shows CPU's Max Temp but you can find it somewhere at AMD's site) that theres only a 3.1% difference between the 955 and the 965. But we all can tell that the 965 C3 can overclock like a monster, and since the C3 is a 125W, that kind of means less heat. :D

If U have the money, go i5 . If you want to save(not small amount) some money, go with intel, the only different between these is that the i5 has better OC potential, and as I mentioned they can take high temps easy.

I donnu...Read some reviews and see for youself :p

so the answer would be no..

also the 790 series is not the only AMD chipset that supports crossfire.. 770, 785 also support crossfire..

can you briefly tell us how you did that? I just want to take some notes for when I decide between these two (or 3 now that 955 in the picture for value candidate).

Go for the C3 stepping 965... alot of people successfully hitting 4ghz rather easily

Well I just basically use AOD(AMD OverDrive), you can overclock easily without having to use the BIOS(If you have a black edition CPU),

I can do that from the BIOS so I could boot windows with 3.4GHz. I just ran a stability test and it was as stable as 3.2GHz...Anyway, when I'm about to game, I have a saved gaming profile that when I load it will simply clock up my CPU to 3.8GHz(in AOD).

In the same program(AOD) theres a button which does the same thing as AMD's Cool'n'Quite, except for there's a button :D. And which will clock down your CPU when you press it, and clock up depending on the load.

It's pretty easy to use and gives you access to everything available in BIOS(Multiplier, Voltage, HT Ref. Clock, etc)

You can download it from here, all you have to do after installation is go to preferences > change Novice Mode to Advanced Mode

Hope that helped. =]

Anything else, I'm glad to help =)

now there're 3 good choices, i guess i'll see what Frys have for me this Friday.

1.67v core voltage, on AIR!?!? Are you serious? Tell me you aren't planning on keeping that chip for very long, or you're doing a suicide overclock. 56ºC is pretty high, also. You're going to fry that chip if you aren't careful. High temperatures and excessively high vcore is a recipe for disaster. Your CPU is destined for electromigration if you keep running it like that.

Depends on if you can find a good motherboard for under $150. Low-end P55's aren't very high quality.

Around 100C is the maximum on most core2 and above. It's perfectly fine to run the chip at 80C although some users get scared of that. Over 100C the chip will throttle to protect itself.

I guess it also depends on how you define a "good motherboard". There really are plenty of nice boards knocking around that neighborhood these days.

139.99 GIGABYTE GA-P55-UD3R

134.99 ASUS P7P55D LE

169.99 EVGA P55 LE

159.99 MSI P55-GD65

Not to mention the $109 board in my sig, which booted famously on the first try, overclocked with no issues whatsoever, and allows for plenty of nice customization in the BIOS.

Low-end P55's aren't very high quality.
Again, I'm not sure how you define your terms, here. Is this moreso than any "low-end" AM3, X58 or other chipset?

Compared to the 965, here.

Yeah, the problem is that neither the phenom nor i7 are overclocked.

I also found a bunch of benches at stock clocks, etc. What I really would like benchmarks Ph955/965 vs i5 750 vs i7 920 all overclocked to "average" max overclocks (which are easily found on any forums). Otherwise it's impossible to compare these.

All you have to do is go to anandtech and tomshardware and read up.

I mentioned I was able to hit 4.0GHz @ 1.6725V, I didn't mention that I'm booting\using it 24\7. :p ALL of the time my cpu is clocked down to 800\2100MHz, I only clock it up to 3.8GHz(Which takes 1.55V) when I game which I do for like 2-3 hours a day only, I only tried 4.0GHz as I wanted to see how good would this CPU be compared to my old 9950. And yes 4.0GHz @ 1.6725V on air and it doesn't even go over 60. Max temp was 56.(My secret is that I have my PC right under my air conditioner. :D

Thing is you didn't mention if you wanted to overclock or not. And how high are you willing to overclock if you want to.

4GHz or close to it should be good enough. My current one are FX55 (OC to 3ghz) and x2 4200 and I'm kinda ok with them. Just looking for "fun" upgrade and best bang for the money.

Where the hell would you find a $149 i5? Am I just looking hard enough because that's hard to pass up over a phenom II

It looks like PassMark does not seem to like AMD cpus at all. It says my Q9550 is faster than every AMD cpu except the 6 core Opteron 2431 and the Phenom 2 965. I would put that in the same category as the Phenom 2 940 when not overclocked.

^ Yeah, I noticed that too. Accoding to that benchmark, the 940 is barely equal to the Q8200/Q8300.
