Hello all,

I may be getting this PSU very soon (I am looking for a new mid-range solid PSU) and was told that this is a decent one. It also seems to get pretty good reviews, although several users have talked about a "clicking" noise the fan makes -- sometimes a few days after they install it, sometimes a few months.

Does anyone here have this unit? If I encounter this clicking after I buy it, is there any way to fix it myself? Or do I just have to keep RMA-ing until I get a non-clicking unit?

Thanks!

Hi, I too plan to buy this PSU, and heard about the clicking problem on Newegg. I've had power supplies open before, and if the fan does start making noise, i'll just put in a 120mm fan from a spare.
If you ever need to do this, just make sure you don't touch ANY capacitors or the board or it wont be a very cheap fix.

Hi,
Thanks for the tip nurakiera. I've already bought it now, and it's been up and running for a few days now. So far so good.

good luck, be sure to post if anything happens by the middle of next month. that's when i'm doing a full build. :D

Got one of these a couple weeks ago. So far I have been very impressed with the PSU. For the rebate price, hard to fault it. Mine has been totally silent, at least I cannot hear it over my case fans in my HTPC which are pretty quiet.

It's strange that I have the slightly different build (Seasonic) with the green 135mm Adda Fan (XFX 650 Watt) Here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207002

I bought this about 4 months ago on NewEgg for $49.99 AR w/ Free Shipping. They are both 650 Watt XFX PSU's, but they are different builds (I think) Seems like people on NG are complaining about that clicking noise you're refering to.

Anyway...I wonder why my 650 XFX PSU (Green Fan) always seems to cost more now then the Black/Grey 650 Watt version. I can tell you she runs nearly silent as fas as I'm concerened. See my specs belows. Running a fairly decent rig w/ 6-120mm fans & 1-140mm fan, plus o/c CPU & a 6870 VC.

Good luck & I hope you don't have any issues!

I'm about to place the order for one of these, and came across this thread while hunting for reviews. I'll report back if I get clicking.

Mine doesn't click. Do you know who makes the grey fan version? I had assumed both were Seasonics.

Still no clicking in mine -- it's been up and running since a few days after my first post. All seems good.

I've had Thermaltake fans make that clicking sound and appears to be related to the way the fan speed is controlled. It's doing a PWM type regulation to control speed and I would guess the pulsing generates the apparent clicking sound.

It could be as simple as something hitting the blade.

Ive seen had power supplys where a wire fell out of place, onto the blade, and it makes a sort of skipping sound every .3 seconds.

Just got my new rig put together, and I am happy to report there is no clicking. There is hardly ANY sound either, very very quiet fan!

Just wanted to report that I used this PSU in a build I did last week and it's working great without any clicking.

Tapping does nothing. I've ran the fan by itslef and I can feel each click. You can feel the torque of each click. When I spin the blades with my finger you can feel the blades rotation is discreet for a lack of a better word. I think it has something to do with the magnets. Think of a tick tock watch. That's basically how the blades spin. And you know the clicking sound the watch would make. Imagine that at high RPM. Now I've had fans where the blades spin smoothly. I always wondered if this was a Thermaltake design.

Did you guys get the green version or the grey? I noticed on XFX website the model number ends NLG9 for green and NLH9 for the grey version. At newegg its CAG9 and CAH9.

Mine is grey. Not sure if they are any different besides the fan. Grey seems to be cheaper on newegg.

The green and gray versions should be identical other than the colour.

Bad news.

My XFX 650w has developed "The Click". Woke up today to get ready for work and I heard a faint clicking noise. Closer inspection of the pc and sure enough the power supply was clicking at about 220 clicks per minute. At the moment my case has both side panels removed so the clicking is obvious. I don't think the clicking will be noticeable if the case had all the panels on.

Needless to say I'm a little upset that a week old PSU has developed this clicking noise. I have no idea if this is a problem to be worried about or it's just a harmless noise.

Had the same issue with an enermax psu, replaced it twice and still the new unit would tick. Playing around with the fan I noticed it was a little loose which caused it to wiggle a bit as it spun. One thing that fixed the problem was mounting the psu fan facing up, but still in found the problem very annoying

I just bought the gray fan version on ebay, was a sealed box too. Fired it up and it clicks - loud (I'm in a quiet studio apartment). Definitely has a continuous tick-tick-tick sound regardless of the load on the supply. I pointed the fan up then rotated the housing to point the fan towards the floor (at which time i was a bit tempted to slam this PS to the floor to see if that would help eliminate the ticking sound). It ticked no matter what position the PS was in. I'm sure I'll hear it when it's mounted in the case.

Not to revive an old thread, but this thread is relevant to my post.

I bought this PSU about 1.5 weeks ago, and I can verify it does still suffer from the clicking problem. I can make the clicking temporarily stop by firmly tapping on the side of the PSU, but it will start back up about 10 minutes later. The click is constant and loud enough to drive a person nuts in a quiet room. If you're a light sleeper and you keep your PC in your bedroom, don't even think about getting this PSU. Now I get to deal with customer support and see if they'll do anything about it.

It's been awhile since I hit these boards. XFX is a fine company & I'm sure you will not have any issues w/ a replacement/repair. I know it's a PITA, but these things happen sometimes. I own the Green Fan version of this 650 watt PSU & she is quiet as can be.

Good Luck!

I just got a reply back from an XFX tech. He said I should not be hearing such noises and that hearing them is not normal. He recommends I exchange the PSU for a new one either via the retailer I purchased it from, or RMA. In case anybody else has this issue and is curious of their stance on it.

I know this is a bit late in this thread, but did you end out replacing the fan? My old Antec NeoHE 550 just popped on me and I was looking on newegg at this XFX unit as a replacement, but replacing the fan uppon arrival. Is it a standard 3-pin fan, or a 4-pin PWM fan?

Look at the strands coming out of the psu. Make sure the ones connected to your gpu that no other device is on that strand. if there are move them to another. The gpu must not share a strand with a other device. See if it solve your issue

The fan uses two wires, like most PSU fans do.

That would be completely pointless. This is a physical issue with the fan. Putting a GPU on a different cable won't change anything.

I did not end up changing the fan. Shortly after I made that post circumstances required my PC to be moved to a noisier environment, so I don't hear the clicking anymore except for brief moments. It does still continuously click though anytime the PC is on.
