Is SLI 6600 GT or Single 7800GT Better?

Hey all,

I was planning on purchasing another 6600GT for my machine and going SLI with it. Howerver if I save up some christmas money I'd definately be able to afford a 7800GT a bit later. Does anyone know which configuration would be faster? Also are there any benchmark scores of something like this, ie 2 6600 GT's in SLI compared to a single 7800GT. Any help on this would be great. Thank you.

Single 7800GT now, save up for a 2nd 7800GT for SLI as it will get cheaper next year as well!!!

Hey guys thanks for the quick responses...Looks like I'll just save up some money for the 7800gt. Thanks for the advice.

I would get the 7800GT, no doubts about it. It can do TRAA, and is faster, with less hassle. At the time, there were plenty of reviews with 2x6600GT's vs. 6800GT, and the 6800GT is generally a better setup. Unless you play in a lower res. The 7800GT is faster than the 6800GT, so it should extend the performance lead.

Unless another $300 card comes out, that has better performance. Just like the 7800GT is now faster than 2x6600GT's and $300. And thats the problem with the "buy one now, and another a year later" part of SLI and Crossfire.

I agree. I would either SLI now or just get one card and get a new card when you plan to upgrade. Technology will continue to become more advanced and SLI doesn't cover that area of performance.

Hey all,

Checked at Newegg and they have a bunch of 7800 GT's here but that doesn't always relate to the best card. Thanks again.

You want this one right here.

Copper cooler.
Factory 60MHz core overclock.
Factory 100MHz mem overclock.
Outstanding price.
Outstanding Performance.
Free Quake 4 if you register at eVGA's website.

Just for reference, I went from SLI'd 6600GTs to a single 7800GT (the exact one linked above) and wow what a difference! With the dual 6600GTs, I used to be able to play Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory with SM3, 16x AF, HDR, Soft Shadows, and Parallax Mapping at 1024x768 max. Now with a single 7800GT, I can play with the exact same settings at 1280x1024 with more fps. Definitely worth the money I spent.

SLI 6600GTs <= Single 6800GT/Ultra <= SLI 6800GT/Ultra <= 7800GT

That is just a rough comparison, of course. Just like many others have stated, the 7800GT does have more features than any 6000 series gpu. And it will draw less power than dual 6600GTs, even.

So yes, definitely save up however much extra money you need to and go for the 7800GT.
