I currently have a couple of HTPC's that play media from a WHS. I'm currently using home plugs to provide connections around the home but not sure what there actual speed is. Is there any simple tools that I can use to determine the transfer rate (other than just dragging a file from one place to another) to see what my speed is? Im not sure if I could get a higher rate using wifi N

I'm an enterprise WAN data technician for a carrier. Iperf is what we use. One of my biggest frustrations is people who use Speedtest.net thinking it tells them all they need to know about their bandwidth and latency (which half the time they don't understand the difference between anyhow).

Even more frustrating is when said people run Speedtest during high data utilization, and complain that, "I'm only getting a fraction of my bandwidth!" Of course you're not seeing all of your bandwidth, the pipe is already almost full, you idiots.
