Help needed:Windows won't boot from CD-ROM

I went into the bios set CD-ROM as boot first, put xp pro cd in cdrom, reset the computer, the intial screen pops up that says "press delete to enter", I don't hit anything and the screen goes black and says "checking computer for hardware compatibility", it stays on this screen for 20 seconds and then goes black, I let it sit for about 3 minutes but nothing happed so I shut it down......anyone had this problem???
