Where are all the UT3 players???

If what I hear is true, I would rather take the six well designed, very awesome TF 2 maps over 16 or so shitty UT 3 maps. More doesn't always equal better, and I would gladly take lesser maps if all of them were designed awesome, over 3 times as many mediocre maps.

How is this comment relevant? Dude - correct me if I'm wrong, but I know you don't own UT3 (as stated further up this thread) & from what you're saying it sounds as though you don't own TF2 either. FYI, there are some absolute gems in UT3 - you'll see, should you choose to join us :D

It's relevant because the guy I quoted made it a bullet point that UT 3 ships with a ton of maps, while saying other MP FPS games ship with a fraction of the maps. It doesn't matter how many maps it ships with if none of them are very good.

I own TF 2, every one of the six maps Valve shipped with the game was / is awesome... I'd much rather have six awesome well designed maps then 20 mediocre ones, but hey, some people want quantity over quality. I think CoD 4 only has 8 or so MP maps, but same deal, there really isn't one of those maps that I don't like to play in the rotation. Yea, I'm going by what others say about the UT 3 maps, but so many people list it as a negative after the UI / browser that I'm not eager to throw $40 - $50 down on the game simply to see for myself when superior stuff exists.

I mean, if you don't dig the maps in TF 2, that's cool, but general consensus is that they are pretty badass. And nah, while I thought about getting UT 3 with my leftover cash, Best Buy putting The Witcher on sale for $40, and GoGamer putting SupCom FA on sale for $20 sealed my decision about where the money is going. Gotta support the PC developers that still give a damn ;)

Fair enough, Roufuss, fair enough. I dip in to TF2 occasionally, but I think I'm a UT whore at heart :) (does it show?? :p:D)

As a die-hard 2k4 fan, the UT3 demo felt like a punch in the guts to me. I had pre-ordered months ago, and flip-flopped on cancelling it. Still I persevered and lo and behold, the game that came out was not that different from the demo.

It has been almost a month now, and one patch later. I am horrified by the lack of players on the servers, but I am still playing Warfare regularly, and enjoying it. The patch was definitiely a step in the right direction. Also, I guess my lack of love for realistic FPS games like COD4 are also a reason I play it so much. However, I think that what needs to be said is that this game does not stack up very well to UT2k4. I used to play ONS on that for hours and hours at a time, also loving the custom game types like TAM. I can only play WAR for about one or two matches, and usually am not bothered with CTF or DM. What they have removed in this iteration means that it cannot match up to the greatness of UT2k4.

I have no idea what went on behind the scenes at Epic/Midway, but all I can say is (1) that the PS3 is a big factor, (2) Epic has implicitly left the ball at the feet of modders, saying "take the engine and tweak it if you don't like the consolization we did". It is almost like handing us over a tech demo. The problem being that with not many people playing already, what hope can modders bring to the game as traditionally mods serve to fragment the online population further? (3) This game does not favour newbies. Those who were good at ONS are great at WAR, so newbies will turn up, get annihalated if they do not know what to do, and then leave in disgust. Very few will be persistent enough to improve.

Okay, its been almost a month since I made the above comment. Here is my current evaluation: -

The game has defnitely grown on me. I am so used to WAR that I don't play ONS anymore. I really enjoy it but there are massive problems with team-balance online. I suppose this is endemic to all team-based FPS games but if there are just one or two better players on one team, it can greatly reduce the enjoyment for the worse team. Normally ppl are graceful enough to switch online, but you get the cases where one team is happy to pummell the other into the ground, and as there is no balancing between matches, this can be very discouraging.

I hardly play the other game types. I am still playing 2k4 FREON (like TAM) occasionally. All said, I am much more positive as I see a definite increase in the numbers of players online.

UT3 has grown on me some too. However death match is all I will play. I still hate warfare but not as much as I used to. I think the mode is probably ok, but the maps are shit. They are clearly not the quality of the DM maps that shipped with the game. The only one I can stand is the Torlan Classic level. I still hate vehicle CTF. Most of the maps seem way too small. There were maps for UT2004 that were far larger than the ones I've seen for UT3. So that isn't good.

I'm not sure quality over quantity is especially good in this case, i think a good balance is to shift towards quantity.

The TF2 maps are very good, but theres only like 6, same with CoD4.

Now this is good to start with, the quality is appreciated but it doesn't take long for them to get boring. IMO the good quality maps get boring at more or less an equal rate as the lesser quality maps, so while they're good to play the games do get boring a lot faster.

This was a MASSIVE issue with DoD:S for me, it was a fantastic game which I really enjoyed playing but I just burned myself out playing it, the maps just boring too fast due to playing them all so frequently.

The UT3 maps that I've played are all fairly decent quality but as always they have a nice wide range of both gametypes and maps, which makes for a much more in depth game.

I'd rather have twice the maps in TF2 at half the quality, that's for damn sure, I happen to think that a few of the 6 maps are pretty bad (2fort is utterly crap) so that's only really 5 maps.

I blame this bite sized game development on Valve and Co, HL2 released with no multiplayer and CS:S was beta to say the least. HL2DM was only a handful of maps. The Episodes only got smaller, and TF2 is only 6 maps.

The promis of more content later on seems to get forgotten about after releasing more maps, I can all but gurantee we wont see more than maybe 2 addiitional maps for TF2, at which point I wont be able to stand the sight of the original 6 (5)

I'm talking about the physical size of the maps. The vehicle CTF maps are just too small. The warefare maps look like shit to me and they are odd layouts that just don't flow for shit. Makes navigation a cluster fuck.

To me Warfare doesn't seem any worse than UT2004's Onslaught mode, the maps are a bit more complex, as the Ons ones tended to be just large open terrain with largely open nodes, the War maps are less open and have some indoor/covered areas, which means that vehicles can't slay people on foot quite as easily which is a bonus in my book.

It didn't take me any longer to learn the War maps than any other map in recent history.

I think the texturing and overall look of the warfare maps blow. Additionally I think that the layouts are terrible. I don't think they are harder to learn as I didn't say that. I just don't like the look and feel of them in general. I won't play it because I hate the maps. Playing Torlan I enjoy warfare far more, but I still don't like it compared to ONS.

Sorry, your comments about navigation suggested the maps were harder to learn, navigating them is easy once you know the layout...

navigation also counts in the layout though: There aren't many options in the warfare maps. they suck compared to the old Ons maps.

What I'm looking for is more vCTF maps. I'm getting tired of like the 6 out of the box maps. And most online servers don't have anything other than that.

Bring on the MAPPACKS!!!!!!!!

Dan D, find all your WAR map guides here: - http://www.beyondunreal.com/content/articles/219_1.php

I find that with persistence, Warfare is an utterly superb gametype. Believe me, I was initially of the same opinion as you about it. This has now been turned 180 degrees. Persist and learn and you will be rewarded.

I'm sorry, are we on the same internet?

Yes, I'm sorry(glad?) to inform you that most players on (the PC side anyways) of UT are a tad more graceful online then the usual CS OMG YOUR MOM N00B CAKE folks.

Even if I still liked the game I couldn't play it anymore because of the elitist snobs. They say shit like OMFGWTFBBQSAUCE!!!!!!!!!!! and bullshit like that.

Well it doesn't happen every match but usually if you ask like a normal person, someone good will switch. There are occasions where it doesn't happen, but in these cases you normally leave the server if it persists for more than 1 match.

I own UT3, but I rarely play online, I just don't like dealing with lag, dropped connections, and unbalanced teams etc.

when i first played through the ut3 sp on the easiest difficulty i managed to beat the final boss without dying once but when i played it on normal i was surprised by how good the final boss was and i only won by 20-16  any tips for finishing the ut3 sp on hard?

Its pretty easy to abuse the level design and AI in that last boss fight. This is from memory, as I am too lazy to load up the game right now, but...Find yourself the Machine Gun and then the Rocket Launcher. Next, you will find some stairs that lead to a long corridor. At one end of this corridor is an elevator that, when you jump down, will lead you right back up. In the middle of said corridor this is a Health Pack(?). At the other end of the corridor there is just a drop off.

I found that by abusing this little corridor and the AI made the last boss on any difficulty setting easy. She would run up the stairs (only entrance to corridor) and you just shoot a rocket at her feet, she falls down, the elevator brings her back up, you shoot her again. Or, you just back up the corridor while shooting her with the machine gun. Run out of ammo? Go find some more. There is also a Flak Cannon close by, which makes abusing that corridor easier due to mass splash damage.

Beyond that "tip" you could do what the poster above me said. :p

ut3 wasnt done very well... i dont know why but it just feels bad. Not to mention they built the game around console and didnt even think about us pc players.. all we got is a port... it doesnt even have all the versatility of options that you can tweak for your pc. Even though im using a keybord and mouse i feel that im playing it with a gamepad... and that is just not right...

There you go, corporate greed... sell on console, more console player = more money... they'll say goodbye to us PC users, i think ut04 was the last decent game for us pc guys.

mainly im getting owned by the shock rifle.i mean 200 damage in 1 second wtf

im constantly moving all the time.mostly in the wrong direction.sometimes i run into the path of rockets that are not heading straight for me because i dont see them.i can time items pretty well but particularly at close range the normal ai has better aim and especially better reflexes than me.i just started playing on hard.the first fight i won 10-4 but the first deathmatch at shangri la i kept losing 39-40 but eventually my team won for me  .if it wasnt for my sniper rifle skills i probably wouldnt have gotten any kills at all.

Meh don't get mad. The smart AI is what makes the game worth playing in Offline mode. Just know you'll get better and better, so s*, you may "suck" now, but in a week time you'll be winning those matches 40-0. :p

in a team deathmatch with bots on both sides? unlikely lol.its just that shangri la is my favourite map.if i cant own on shangri la i cant on any map.besides the awesome graphics its a snipers paradise where even i can make just as many kills as deaths against hard bots.unfortunately they tend to get up close and personal with the link gun on the harder difficulties :( not to mention their continuous jumping/strafing make headshots less frequent.

Hackers galore. Serious, this game has no Anti-hack. I can smell a hacker when I can't kill someone 40-0 who runs around with a enforcer.

I ain't no noob either, normal pub matches I at elast hit 20-5

i find enemies can do 100 damage in 1 hit with the secondary fire of the shock rifle.i havent been able to do that so far :(

Only with a shock combo, which is quite easy for anyone to do. The regular secondary fire does something around 40 damage.

i remember coming around a corner heading for the shield belt only to get blown into the air by a waiting akasha at close range with the shock combo then getting hit again in mid air .if this isnt the best ai i have ever seen i dont know what is.im very good in quake 3 with the rail and fortunately my skills translate to sniper headshots in ut3.but i find most corridors too narrow to dodge rockets unlike quake 3.

I just played through the sp campaign in normal difficulty and in one run i'm in the map after suspense. All i have to say is, wow. I've havent had much fun playing a game since rise of the triad comm-bat fights a while back. The clock hitting 0 when the score is 1-1, thus going into overtime, to get the flag, run facing backwards fragging into killing spree with the link gun alt-fire and the minigun right after that, to securing the flag to your base everything in under 1 minute is the best gaming satisfactions i've had in a long while. :D
Im happy. Now, Im going back for more.

Actually I played UT2004 yesterday. Before I knew it an hour and a half passed. I was enjoying the hell out of CTF. That's something I haven't been able to do with UT3.

IMO, vehicle gametypes are lame and stupid in most games and most people have just forgotten how much fun it is getting down and dirty up close to your opponents instead of doing barrel rolls in a jet and taking a jeep off a sweet jump while occasionally shooting at an enemy perched atop some far away building. FPS player's preferences have shifted away from what ut3 offers: a solid dm experience. The demo was an absolute deal breaker for many people seeing how it was absolute horse $#!+. Most of the problems could have been avoided if that HORRIBLE TERRIBLE RETARDED mod on the epic forums that goes by FLAK wasn't such a power tripping biatch banning everyone and deleting threads by the minute.

For the few people who still found themselves having fun in the game and for the diehard fans who still gave it a try despite being ignored by epic, there is some hope. A talented player and programmer that goes by the name of Lotus has written up a mod called CustomUT for the game that fixes some of the issues people have. If anyone's curious about it hit up www.unrealna.com .

I just bought the game a few days ago feeling incredibly unsure about it but I wanted to see how it ran on my new Christmas PC and I'm glad I picked it up.

I did 5 hours of assault. Only managed 30 minutes of UT3 time, mostly DM.

Well, after patch 1.2, I still have a severe hitching problem in Vista but XP is just fine.

gosh darn, I love UT3. I dont care what anyone else says.

Well that makes one of us.

I occasionally play Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch, but all the other gameplay types suck ass. Mainly because of the maps. I don't care for Warfare mode and I miss Assault.
