Have you thought about buying a prepackaged NAS and something like a Boxee or apple TV to access your files? I know its not a HTPC and doesnt allow for a lot of tinker in the OS, but when they are setup its so easy to use. This may not be your cup of tea but I thought I would throw it out there.
