For those who are interested in building something similar, here's the final spec list I ended up going with:
1x Lian Li PC-V2130 case (holds 15x 3.5" + 4x SSDs) - PC-V2130B
1x Supermicro X10DRi-T motherboard (DP and 2x Intel10GbE) - MBD-X10DRi-T
1x Antec HCP1300 Platinum PSU (Platinum rated...

Thanks folks.
I run quite a few VMs, both for work and personal projects, host a web development environment and web servers that my bro uses, run a pfSense firewall, home server, etc.
Also nice that it could function as a work DR site in a pinch. Spin up the VMs, re-point DNS and you're done...
Hi all. I'm building a new home server to replace my two ageing, and noisy, Dell T3400 workstations and it would be great to hear your thoughts.
My goal is producing a reasonably priced, good performing, VMware host server that is as silent as possible.
Specs:
1x Lian Li PC-V2130 case (holds...
The problem is the competition is worse! ASUS are the best of a bad bunch IMO.
On the other hand, I received a MAXIMUS V GENE board today. I just finished pulling the P8P67-M PRO and reinstalled everything, inlcuding the 2600K. Now this is a different story entirely. What a well built solid...
I had the same issue with my P8P67-M PRO.
These boards really are junk. I've had mine for a year now and each BIOS has been buggier than the previous. ASUS have not improved their BIOS team in over a decade. I remember BIOS issues plaguing my P2B board and said I would never buy ASUS again. I...

It has come down in price a LOT since I bought a month ago. I paid $174.99 x2.
Now it is $124.99 but currently out of stock.
I wouldn't recommend RAID 5'ing 2TB drives, go RAID 10, or JBOD.
This is widely accepted.

Palit GTX 580 3GB versions in SLI - Definitely a NO GO in this case. Far too hot, and far too noisy.
EVGA GTX 590 is a perfect match for this case. Runs very cool and quiet.
Wow, didn't know that. That's pretty cool.
Will be interesting to see what the Z68 brings. Hopefully it will address the 24p bug.

Most probably the Noctua NH-U9B.
Whilst I hadn't bought an ASUS board in almost 10 years, I can say that the P8P67-M Pro really is superb. Their BIOS support is far better than Intel's when it comes to mobos too.
The Intel Bad Axe boards were never right, despite 18 BIOS releases. Intel boards...
Windows Media Center or Plex which now has a Windows version. As someone said, depends on whether you are using Tuners, for which I recommend Ceton.

N1GHTRA1N, a bit off-topic, but nice projector man! I'm still rockin' a Mitsu HD1000U but have been tempted by the 8700UB. A great piece of kit.
I run a Mac Mini with Plex off of mine, what software are you using on your new build?
