As for the 911 on the wall - I googled 911 blueprints and found one I liked, used beamer to project the picture on the wall and traced it with a black marker ;)
Here's my humble workstation at my gf's place.
I made the desk myself using a vintage sewing machine from mid 50's as a base. Laptop is hidden in a ventilated drawer. Not so much high performance workstation, but it gets the job done ;)

Here's my workstation. Got rid of the Jerker when was moving to my new place.. it took way too much space thus I had to settle with a smaller Fredrik.

if you have the hardware already then try it out.. I think memory doesn't mean as much as CPU processing power.. as for the frontend - I'm using mediaportal.
I recently built HTPC based on the very same mobo and CPU, 2 gigs of RAM - runs perfectly on 42LG6000 through HDMI (I have a slight problem with the TV tho..).
I agree with Danny about the case and PSU - I myself got Tacens Theca case and Fortron PSU.. I never go for generic case/psu combo.
