Getting the pre-release demo to start had a few quirks for me too. For once, after downloading the content files it never unlocked them even after the game officially went live. I restarted steam and then it said it was "decrypting game files". Then I restarted again and it said it was updating...

Probaly the new catalyst 9.11 drivers for the 5870. I have a 5770 and am stuck with 9.10 and the game absolutely flies on my PII X3 @ 1650x1050 res. Try downgrading.
