Hi all,
My brother emailed me for some help with a memory upgrade he's doing to his system.
He has been running on 1gb for a while in Vista and bought a 2GB generic stick. After he installed, he had this problem (see below). He returned the stick for another but the problem remains...
Interestingly, the monitor reports 1600x1200 when windows sets it to 1680x1050.
When I (in XP) set it to 1400x1050, the monitor says it's 1680x1050 -it does fill my screen then but the text still doesn't look right and upon inspection, it does seem to be making everythign 'short and fat'...
Hi all,
I bought cheapest 20 inch monitor I could find - which was the dabsvalue one.
It claims (in the book) to have a native resolution or 1680 x 1050 @ 60hz - which is what I'm after.

An update for those in a similar position.

I need this becaus I have a 19" and a 15"...
Hi there,
A colleague has an external drive with tens of gigs of 'stuff'.
I'm not sure *exactly* what he was doing but something went wrong and now when he plugs it into a PC, it reports as needing a format and he is unable to get access to his files.
He found a program on the web...
Thanks for the help everyone.
I take on board advice re: power supplies.
The problem in my case seems to have been a hosed windows install as suggested above.
I reinstalled, patched etc and had a 6 hour Civ 4 session yesterday. It seems that the system is working fine just now (even if...
Thanks for the advice guys.
Suspecting you may be right about the power, I first tried another random power supply (450 watt, even less branding than my other psu), this didn't change anything - can boot up, as soon as windows loads, the monitor switches off. after about 30 seconds, the pc...
