Yeah, it seems the creative vista drivers will only allow one input device to be active at one time, strange but then they are relatively new drivers. edit: you might need to check +20Db microphone boost in the microphone properties.

You may need to right click on the speaker button on the right hand of the taskbar, select recording devices and then find microphone in the list of inputs and right click and select "Set as default device". Hope that helps.
